Where Are The Mixshows?

I’ve been listening to various Urban stations and I’ve noticed the growing trend of no mixshows on the weekends, only weekdays at noon or afternoon rush hour.

Some iHeart Urbans syndicate mixes from LouiVee here from Atlanta on Friday and Saturday nights.

Once upon a time, you could here local DJs mixing live and even broadcast from inside the nightclubs on weekends.

Can you list stations to give an example

I notice the same as well for example 102.5 The Block in Charlotte, both urban stations in Fayetteville, NC, and a few more on the urban ac side. I notice this trend since the beginning of the pandemic once the radio layoffs started.

These nightclubs were sponsors of the mix shows. These sponsorships likely dried up or the clubs closed during the pandemic.
That brings up an interesting point: how did people whose profession was "mixer" get by during the worst and first two years of the pandemic? No clubs, no big weddings or celebrations, no company parties...

There’s been an increase of mixer content on sites like MixCloud and SoundCloud. Also, Apple Music has mix shows on demand and features mix shows on their Apple 1 (Beats 1) linear radio station. Like you said though, this income can’t be enough to offset the loss from clubs, weddings, and other events.

Probably much like any part of the live entertainment industry. Good friend of mine runs a large concert PA business. For almost eighteen months, the only business he could get was renting portable PA gear to churches for parking lot services. That was maybe worth $2-5K per month, verses $18-60K per month.

Before 2020, a few urban/urban AC stations did mix live from the studio on weekends without any club appearance. Also, I notice some urban stations who do still mix on weekends are pre-recorded.

Sooooo many things are pre recorded now especially here in Atlanta on our urban stations. I know some inside folks at U1 that said there show in particular is pre recorded and never live.

Oh my, yea times have changed. I know Streetz in Charlotte recycles their mixes throughout the week and replay it weekends. U1 station here does play a one hour mix show which I believe is pre-recorded.

Is this like when I used to turn on this one station every Friday night and they'd play "Good Times" by Chic and "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang? I used to like that.

I do know the mixes on K104 here in Dallas/Ft.Worth are pre-recorded. Found that out when the same mixes played for Memorial day was played for the 4th of July.
