Goodbye Awesome 93.1, Hello Classic Rock 93.1.

“Safe” is a good description of the playlist I heard. Not as red around the neck as the legacy rocker, less southern rock…but I question having motormouth DJs telling boring stories about their high school days. In a country with tens of thousands of out of work pros, couldn’t the automated streaming syndicator find 3 or 4?

I'm scratching my head at this format choice to be honest. Star and B are constantly fighting for that #3 spot. Why not go Hot AC?

Interesting. I remember 93.1 going Classic Rock/Hits around 1990? With KISS-FM? That was an enjoyable format and then it changed to "hair metal" with WWZZ Z-93.

#3, if it translates into strong sales demo ranks, is going to represent strong billing based on the numbers. Why change if it extremely successful?

I hadn’t checked this board in a while and I caught this change by accident today. I hit the button for 93.1 and heard Whitesnake “Is This Love” and didn’t think anything of it as it would be a typical “Awesome 93.1” song. But after that came a quick “Classic Rock 93.1” ID and a Bad Company song and I knew something was up.

I’m not completely surprised at the change. “Awesome 93.1” had a rough go of it. I was turned off early by too many ‘90s AC songs. But recently they had reduced those and scaled it back to more ‘80s. So it was sounding good at the end, but it was too little too late to save it. I hate to see it go, but I get the desire to go after WIMZ. I would have done rock-based classic hits instead, but this is probably close enough for what they want to achieve. This will, however, leave a space for a WJXB competitor. I’d like to see a full market pop classic hits station, but I suppose the various rimshots will get the job done.

First impression: It sounds like they are using an automated satellite service like Westwood One. I have no idea if that’s what it is, but they are giving off that impression. The music mix sounds fine based on what little I’ve heard so far.

Format of the month club since Summit took over. Scripps had Westwood One Classic Hits, then an in-company voice-tracked rock-based Classic Hits, then Awesome and now this. I only heard a couple of minutes, and it sounds like they're keeping the same no-name morning show (if it was me I'd have a basic jock or voice-tracker with the Most Music Morning Show against John Boy and Billy. Maybe they'd grab a few listeners that are tired of JB&B's act.

The morning show is Ray Gee & Kobe. They are heard on all of the SummitMedia classic rock stations, which are all called “Classic Rock (frequency)”. Yes, we simply have another carbon copy here. The whole jock lineup and playlist is copied from their other stations.

After spending some time listening, I’m finding it hard to hear any difference between the music selections on 93.1 and 103.5. Maybe 93.1 won’t go overboard with the Metallica and AC/DC like WIMZ does. But if anyone else can find any differences, let me know.

Maybe it's my listening habits (I haven't listened for hours at a time), but when I listen to WIMZ, it rocks a lot harder. That's the difference i'm noticing when I listen. Specifically 90's grunge era like STP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc is missing when I tune in. I feel like it's there and i've missed it. It's not as often on WNOX if it is. Let me know if i'm wrong on that. Maybe WNOX will apeal to a different classic rock crowd than WIMZ. I'd like to see a full song history, but i'm coming up short.

As for ‘90s grunge, so far on 93.1, I’ve heard Foo Fighters “My Hero” and Pearl Jam “Better Man”. But then they will turn around and play “Peaceful Easy Feeling” by the Eagles. Of course WIMZ does the same thing. So that’s why I can’t tell the difference. If 93.1 somehow had a different angle it would be worth listening to. Lean older or newer… or go deeper or more hit-based… either way, do something to be different.

One thing that’s really bad is those 6-minute stopsets with nothing but direct response ads. If you can’t sell the time, then play another song.

Something I figured out between posting that last comment and now. If you go to classicrock965.fm from Richmond, same playlist, same hosts. All 6 Summit "Classic Rock" branded stations are 100% the same. Would explain those 6 minute stop sets. Seems like WNOX has yet to sell enough to fill that. I also would assume, the playlist is locked in, because it has worked in those other markets for so long. I did notice MJ (the midday host) mention some local content. That's probably the closest we will get to it sounding local. And the jingles of course. Go Vols! I suspect a change coming in Greenville, SC as well very soon. 6 out of 9 Summit markets now.

I've been told 93.1 gets stuck with the barter ads for the whole cluster. For whatever reason, our satellite radio went out so we switched to the the (then Awesome) 93.1. They played the ad where the woman is glad to buy lunch because she makes cash every time she buys gas about 6 times.

The change should be good news for Loud & 104.9 if they ever move to the Greenback licensed transmitter. (and if it can throw a better signal into west Knox than the current location). I would think Jack, Lake, & B would all pick up listeners from Awesome’s demise. I think Jack will benefit the most.

I’m still nervous about that potential move to Greenback. I’m in West Knoxville and the proposed signal map misses me completely. The current signal is just fine in my area. But we’ll see.

As for who will benefit from the 93.1 change, I don’t think anyone will get a huge increase. Awesome only had about 2 shares. Some listeners will go to Jack and B, but others could go to Lake FM or West 105. And some will also stay right there at 93.1 for classic rock. Certainly there is crossover appeal for the two formats. I know I’ll keep a preset for it.

I would imagine that your signal might be better even though the maps don't show it. At that height and no blockage in between, I'd imagine it's going to cover all of that area very well. I'm also wondering if they will be rebroadcasting from one of the proposed translator permits in Sevier County. With the right playlist and signals, Lake FM has some big potential with Awesome out of the picture. I'd personally pull back from the 70's a bit and focus on the 80's and 90's with this one.
