RE KGHO: You know, it’s really too bad. With more forethought, this operation could be far more professional than it is. It’s a shame because KGHO offers something different on the radio that you don’t hear anywhere else, but let’s be realistic, nobody was going to listen to that translator. Their energy would be far better spent on creating a legally compliant operation in Aberdeen and leaving it at that.

I’ll be curious to see what happens next. If
I were the folks behind KGHO, I would just focus on operations within Grays Harbor and forget about anything else.

Which is the case with many translators around the country. That being said; it seems like there are several on this site who give frequent updates on what's going on with this thing. Isn't that considered listening?

Not when your goal is to take over the countryside by using LPFM's and translators tied to crappy AM stations.

A comment on I made on Radio Discussions is still immortalized on the KGHO Facebook page. I believe that I referred to KGHO as “a waste of bandwidth.” Although harsh, is it true. Nobody would have a problem with anything that they were doing if KGHO operated as a stand-alone station serving Grays Harbor. Actually, I think most people around here would be intrigued by their operation and would have nothing critical to say whatsoever.

However, all of the translators they tried to set up and attempts to skirt around the FCC rules have made it difficult to appreciate KGHO as anything other a fly-by-night operation. Again, their time, money, and energy would be better spent doing something more productive. For all of the wasted effort, they may have even been able to buy a small AM or FM somewhere else (and could have expanded anyway).

re Westwood One tone loop: I wouldn't be surprised to see KGTK and KITZ's licenses turned in to the FCC before the start of 2025. They have very little listenership compared to other AMs. Isn't KARR-1460 still running a few watts from some longwire? Another one that will be null and void before you know it.
I see at least half a dozen AMs going silent in Seattle as the decade progresses. The ones at risk, in my opinion, are 920 and 1400, 1560 KZIZ (which is already silent on STA, IIRC), 1330 (they can just move KGRG-1 online), and sadly, possibly the Z-Twins stations. KYIZ missed the translator train big-time. I would have MUCH preferred KYIZ and their Urban AC format in stereo...KBMS was able to do it for Portland, but not 1620.

Over here in Yakima, KUTI-1460 ESPN has been silent for nearly two weeks. I assume they are on some type of STA. No translator for them either.

But those 'barker channel' tones aren't just in error on small stations - I've heard them on bigger stations as well. One Sunday morning years ago, I caught KGA-1510 with the CBS Radio Networks loop and tone. Another time I had WDAY-970 Fargo on a KiwiSDR in Alberta running non-stop smooth jazz music...turns out it was the Premiere Networks' "Test Channel". I have about 45 minutes of the music recorded off their webstream from later tha

I would think that KYIZ and KBMS would be taken off the air at the same time, as they appear to be in simulcast now. I picked up the KBMS translator when I was in Sandy a couple weeks ago, so it seems to do okay on the eastern side of the market. I still don't quite understand how an LPFM in Vancouver can work with that translator there. Here at my location, the translator is on top but isn't all that listenable. As for AM stations going dark, it looks like Townsquare took KUTI off the air for financial reasons either last week or the week before. In terms of other AM stations going off the air, wasn't KARR's license going to be turned in anyway to make an upgrade of 1480 possible? I seem to remember reading that somewhere. I'm assuming KGTK is audible now, and that they've fixed the hum they were putting out a couple years ago?

They used to own an actual station in Olympia, and even back in the day, didn't run it any better than this fiasco.

I’m not sure why they didn’t stick with what they already had in Olympia if they really wanted to expand. The translators have been a cluster. It was apparent years ago when one of their translators was accidentally relaying KISW.

I used to think radio was fun and games (mainly when I was a teenager and didn’t know how the business worked). I decided to get into the business, and quickly learned about what not to do. But to be fair, I think that KGHO has taught me some lessons over the years too.
 
Somewhat related to the 101.1 / 92.9 discussion. now untolled, Bicoastal Media had their proposed K267CX upgrade approved today. Signal will move from 101.3 to 107.9 and power increases from 135 to 200 watts ERP. .New calls K300EB.

You have to hand it to Spencer, he has some giant brass balls to insist that Bustos correct the interference from his translator.
 
Brian Paul Kelley (aka Brian Spencer) can't get a break, the FCC is picking on him, his hobby station, and his "educational institution". If they only knew the whole story.

Thank God there are some LPFMs that are legit... like Aberdeen High School's KAHS, or KOSW in Ocean Shores, or KXPB in Pacific Beach, that train students for broadcasting and associated careers or provide actual community involvement.
 
KXPB...inside the Wacky Warehouse in Pacific Beach. I haven't been there in 12 years. His store is like an Ace Hardware, a Goodwill, and a concert venue all in one. Every sized nut and bolt you need, plumbing supplies, microwave parts, you name it.
 
Spencer's letter to the FCC mentions a "45dB protected contour" for K266BM. Say what???!!! I thought that stance only held for full power stations.
