S.A. 6+ PPM August Numbers

Some seismic activity to note this past month. KONO lost a few shares but sits atop. Y-100 dashes to second place (I still dont know what their lineup is- or just the mainstream country popularity running them up). VIBE 107.5 has now cracked the Top 5 with a 5.1 share!

Classic Rocker KTKX stumbles a bit but still a leading signal. It was a decent book for the BEAT at 3.7. It was a GREAT book for Spanish with KZEP, KSAH, Preciosa and KLEY all taking steps upward. KMYO still can't get traction since their flip back to AMOR and KKYX despite a great sound, still pulls up a 1 share.

I assume KTFM-HD-2 is WE 94.5 with a 0.3 share. Any opportunities there- it's obviously aimed at 98.5 the Beat however lack of local and city-grade signal is worth a mention...

Really - have you listened to 680? It's massive in power, but compare any song they play to the original recording. It's squashed up beyond all recognition. Loud parts of the songs are loud. Soft parts of the songs are loud. No difference at all.

Cox is really killing it with 5 stations in the top 10. But what intrigues me the most are their AM stations. KKYX AM at 1.0 should be doing better, even with 93.3, 1420, and 1580 playing the same basic classic country. Maybe it's that audio issue.

On the other hand, Cox's KONO AM has been climbing and now is beating out several full power FM's including Amor 95.1, KPAC 88.3, and 94.1 Sports Star. Could it be that they seem to be the highest fidelity AM in the country? No obvious processing at all. Loud parts of their songs are loud. Soft parts of the songs are soft. High frequencies (on a good radio) are sparkling. What a concept!

I like the rotation on KKYX 104.9. I honestly am not listening to AM...oh wait the other day I listened to WOAI and KTSA for a bit. I cant stomach music on AM for that obvious fidelity reason. I do listen to the great KONO 860 on their 101 HD-2 signal - of course I only get that luxury in my wife's Toyota and not my Ram or GMC truck which doesnt carry HD radio... Agree great sound and it shows in the stream numbers.

I like to think the FM translators for KTSA (107.1) and KKYX (104.9) are driving up those numbers, something WOAI could use on 92.5 or 93.3.

Sorry to say, but KONO 860 turned the processing back on. They sound like crap again - a big wall of noise. Probably the 2nd worst sounding station on AM in SAT now. I hope my remarks didn't cause the change! If there are any AM listeners, let's watch to see if their ratings go back down. I'm like you, only the wife's car has HD-2 for KON0-86-FM.

I agree that WOAI at some point soon should install a translator. 92.5/93.3. would be a great choice, still leaving us with three classic country stations. It's hard to believe that they don't even make use of an HD2 on one of their full power FMs. Same thing with KTRH 740 in Houston and KFXR 1190 in Dallas. I wonder why iHeart uses that strategy?

740 is on 99.1 HD2 here

I'm curious how long Sports Star will last on 94.1. It seems to lack revenue and listeners. As for WE 94.5 and 95.1, why not target one of the Top 5 stations in the market?

Honestly, I think Sports Star is perfectly happy with Local-Direct dollars and running the streets than with Nielsen numbers, not sure Alpha corporate feels that way-? Very tough for 94.5 to be a flanker for anything so aimed at the Beat is probably the better bet for now. As KONO-AM is showing us, there is still an appetite for 60s and 70s gold (Oldies) but taking up FM space is a risk. 95.1 is the better of the signals and I just dont think UVN has the strategy to go general market. Some gaps in the full signal spectrum are Classic Country, Alternative, Rhythmic AC and yet another CHR aimed at 961 Now.
