Cumulus KC shuffle coming

Only move that would seem to make sense would be KMJK to 105.1. I suppose it could also be a move of a different kind, but, with the existing staff promoting it, it wouldn't seem to be an outright format change.

If KMJK goes to 105.1, what will happen with 107.3? Does The X go there, or does it do something different?

Something that does strike me as odd is that KMJK's audience is roughly 80% African American and about the same percentage female. It would seem to be holding this moving event in an area where its audience doesn’t live at a venue whose product it does not generally consume. I suppose the retail picture could be different, and I've only been to KC Bier Company a couple times. I, however, have never seen anything but white people at the biergarten.

If they want to effectively compete against Carter’s trio, 105.1 would make more logical sense than moving it to a stick clear on the other side of the metro. Looking at ‘CJK’s coverage map, it’s a much more centrally located signal, and adds more WyCo coverage.

KCJK Coverage

The translators, while more centrally located as well, likely wouldn’t add that much value. Also, considering how Vibe, X and Jack are currently faring, don’t rule out other potential changes within the cluster. We’ve seen this play out with iHeart Seattle 7 years ago.

Maybe the Cloud is looking to unload the 107.3 signal? They just sold the former WDRQ (now WUFL) in Detroit.

How lame would it be if the R&B format lands at either 102.5 or 103.7?

105.1's only purpose in life for years has been to flank KCFX.

I’ve yet to see any sale filings, but a good point nonetheless.

I doubt they’re sacrificing 710’s FM coverage for it. If they want any part of ‘MBZ’s share, they’d keep it, even if 6+ looks paltry.

105.1 is more centrally located to ‘MJK’s demo. If they’re wanting to tank any value the format has and not put up any real competition against Carter, then it’ll be one of the translators (both of which have identical signal patterns).

Cumulus doesn’t usually shuffle multiple stations, but, if 107.3 is moving to 105.1, at least one more change will happen.

I wouldn’t expect that to happen, but I can’t rule it out either.

Seems unlikely given what Cumulus has put into 107.3 and its programming lately. I realize it’s Cumulus, but that seems dumb even for it.

Same tower as KCMO-FM and KCKC (presumably, refugees from the Union Hill TV towers) as well as KSMO-TV.

107.3 is, amazingly enough, a pre-80-90 mistake (upgrade from class A to make room for 106.5 in the late 70s).

I will say 105.1 was supposedly Troy Hanson's baby, and he exited Cumulus a few months ago after causing a kerfuffle at Q101 in Chicago, the station he was tasked with programming on a day to day basis.

Given the above, I do think there's at least an even money chance 107.3's programming moves to 105.1. I presume the two stations would then simulcast for some temporary period of time.

Maybe they’ll make 107.3 a translator for 710

Seems like Cumulus has been making more of an effort with KCMO lately. I understand it just hired another local host after having Chris Stigall, a KC guy, piped in from another market (I think Philadelphia).

I'm not sure adding a full-power FM would do much to save KCMO, though. That station has been on a steady decline for about 30 years now going back to the days Gannett owned it. It probably started when it lost the Chiefs to KCFX in either ‘89 or ‘90.

Gannett started the downward slide, but there were the years when Bonneville owned both KCMO and KMBZ and clearly ran KCMO as a cut-rate flanker. Even before Gannett, KCMO underperformed for such a powerful signal, cycling through country, adult-contemporary, and news-oriented talk. KMBZ had its issues in the 1980s, too - I recall that when I moved to Kansas City in 1990, KMBZ was still playing music in some dayparts after an earlier experiment with talk didn't work out. KMBZ went back to exclusively news/talk toward the end of 1990. As far as news was concerned, both stations had to contend with WDAF, which had an amazing news department that focused on spot news. If you wanted to know right away what was happening, you would tune to WDAF, whether or not you liked country music. Naturally, Entercom killed that off.

Speaking of, what is the entire broadcast flagship history of the Chiefs prior to The Fox gaining the rights?

Was there another tower on Union Hill or the KCTV tower?
I didn't make it clear, but I also was referring to the Signal Hill tower. KYYS (KCKC now?) was on Signal Hill; KCMO-FM and KQRC were on the KCTV tower on East 31st, i.e. Union Hill.

Things just got more interesting…

It looks like 107.3‘s R&B/Hip-Hop format will move to 105.1 and rebrand as “Power 105.1” and that both 95.7 and 107.3 becoming a simulcast similar to its sister stations in Salt Lake City. Stay tuned…

How long does it take for a website domain to be registered before a format change occurs (in one case, it was one week.) Do urban acs ever use "power?"
