Iowa Could The Des Moines Market Get A New Cluster In The Future?

Something I thought of recently. Could Des Moines possibly get a new company in town someday? Meaning a 4th cluster.

With the VCY upgrade (99.5), the Trinity upgrade on 105.5 and also…96.1 (Northwestern) quietly for sale, there are 2 or 3 opportunities there for a national or regional company to enter the market someday.

These current upgrades are being done by these individual organizations right now but it presents opportunities. Des Moines continues to grow and with it being a decently healthy market….who knows. With deep enough pockets there might be the potential for another move in or upgrade.

There’s regional companies like Townsquare and of course nationally Audacy, etc.

Audacy doesn’t look to be expanding into different markets anytime soon. TSquare already has an Iowa presence, but not sure if they’ll look to move west. With Saga already there, they may be able to fit one more FM, depending on revenue and market caps.

Saga is already capped out. 4 FMs and 2 AMs.

I mentioned this on another thread on another state board but I wish iHeart would buy the new 99.5 signal and sell 105.1 KCYZ in Ames. Much improved signal for the cluster.

I really am bummed VCY had to be the organization, even as a Christian, to do the KVDI upgrade. I just want to see something else blanket Des Moines besides that style of dry, elderly programming.

Not just that, but rather bigoted, too. It probably won't get many listeners but VCY has lots of money and I guess would rather do this than burning it in a trash heap - though the effect is ultimately the same.

And I also dont want something 'public' either that always plays weird folk music or niche stuff that most people cant fully get into. I want something more contemporary/mainstream either Christian or not that has more of a mass appeal but is fresh to the metro.

Yeah this is what happens when you have alot of money and paid programming that commercial radio cant compete with.

Part of me holds out hope that maybe they will take this permit and then sell it to try and make money. All they have to do is mount the equipment on the existing tower. Easy stuff. The station to the northeast just has to switch frequencies and increase power as well (KDAO Eldora). This doesn't take alot like new tower construction.
