What's the problem with BIG? First, that dramatic upward climb (remember when they had over an 8 share), and now a dramatic fall to 3.2. Nothing seems to have changed with KFBG since then, except their ratings.

My bigger question is what's the problem with sunny 98.1? Some of the most repetitive playlist I've ever seen.

After seeing the demo breakouts above...
Possibly they lost a PPM panelist/household?
Signal problems? (There were none that I know of.)
Agreed that formatically and musically I did not hear any dramatic change month-to-month (August to September).
Mysterious ways...

About six months ago, I sent a message to BIG, about their music not being newer than about 2007. There was some good pop, alternative, singer-songwriter and other types of music that they weren't playing and they seemed to only play 70s up to about 2007, yet they claimed to play "anything." They gave me a semi-lame response of "we leave the new music to our sister station, Z-90 to take care of." When I wrote back that there was probably a lot of newer music that wouldn't get played on Z-90 (yes, I know they also own 91X and Magic, but there is some music that either wouldn't fit well on those stations or could complement BIG's "anything" format as well) they didn't respond back. A month or two ago I happened to tune in and heard a newer song in their mix - I think it was Imagine Dragons or something like that. So, occasionally they play something from this decade, but otherwise they try to default to the "alternative" to the classic hits on Sunny. There is newer music that could mesh well on BIG, also since we don't have a AAA-type station here anymore, even that kind of freshening up the mix would be welcomed and would still work well with what they are playing currently.

Otherwise I can't really explain the super rise to the upper deck of the pack and then the hard fall. Except for the very infrequent post-2010 song, they sound the same to me.

As a frequent listener to 100.7 Big FM, I've noticed zero signal strength issues. But I did hear a change in their music last month. They seemed to veer more heavily into alternative rock stuff. However, that large rating dip *may* have caused them to go back to their previous mix. Below are the songs they're playing this morning. All except for #8 are likely to be on competitor Sunny 98.1 as well:
  1. Should I Stay or Should I Go by Clash played 16 minutes ago.
  2. Don’t Turn Around by Ace Of Base played 20 minutes ago.
  3. Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac played 24 minutes ago.
  4. Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler played 32 minutes ago.
  5. Eyes Without a Face by Billy Idol played 37 minutes ago.
  6. Runaway by Bon Jovi played 41 minutes ago.
  7. Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar played 43 minutes ago.
  8. Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting by Elton John played 48 minutes ago.

Yeah I can confirm that KFBG does play some of the newer stuff sometimes, Vance Joy's Riptide, Gym Class Heroes' Stereo Hearts, Imagine Dragons, even Stressed Out from twenty one pilots.

I argue Twenty One Pilots should return to 91x though, they did super well on the top 91s, people love them, they're one of the greatest alt-pop acts of the 2010's. I miss them dearly.

Oh yeah also my mom went to the All Time Low concert at the observatory last night in San Diego (she's 52, loves this pop punk stuff because of my sister), there was people of all generations there, the concert sold out (all time low's only sold out concert thus far), and the audience cheered when they brought up the fact their singles "Monsters" and "Sleepwalking" became #1 on the alt charts, their first to ever happened after years of making music.

Currently only Monsters gets 94.9 airplay, and Sleepwalking stopped being on rotation after it was playing as new music, because there's not really any recurrents playing on alt radio right now. 91X doesn't play them at all.

San Diego is missing out on playing new bands, leaving us to stream it all.

I think that’s the issue with Alternative radio at the moment. I looked at the most played recurrent list on Mediabase and a few years ago, the songs lowest on the list had about 100-120 spins nationally. Now the lowest spun songs on this list are at 38. Some of these songs, like “Sleepwalking” and “Here to Forever” are at 48 and 55 spins respectively. And they were released just over a year ago.

To me, this means Alternative adds songs for a few months and because of lousy testing results, are almost completely eliminated nationally. In other words, it seems that a lot of newer songs just are not resonating well, hence the short shelf life and therefore a thin list of recurrents.

That sucks because that'll just mean this decade of alternative is forgotten for completely unjustifiable reasons. Is it really that bad right now?
