95.7 the Spot Audio Processing is Awesome

I thin 95.7 The Spot plays a lot of older music like 98.7 The Spot in Dallas does though it is a slightly newer mix.

I find that 95.7 The Spot has great audio processing. It’s consistently loud and the bass has a punch. I love how it sounds.

I wonder if it's an 11. I heard someone say Audacy has been putting more 11s on air using processing presets customized by the corporate engineers. Jack FM here in Minneapolis I'm 99.9999% sure is an 11 (if not it has to be Omnia) and it also has good processing, especially in the mids and lows. The only issue with Jack I've noticed with their processing is on some songs the bass pumps a little bit and can be noticeable. But overall, Jack has pretty good processing.

Any kind of processing will kill TSL. One exception might be to boost bass and treble on AM to try to overcome the midrange-hot EQ of newer car radios.

On AM in particular, you need density. If you don't have density, you're not going to have a prayer of overcoming electrical interference.

In other words, on AM you need processing - and lots of it.

Not true. Processing originated as a solution to the problem of over-modulation of AM stations over 70 years ago, and was intended, too, to level modulation. FM adopted the processes in the 1940's.

Later processing not only prevented over-modulation, but also a way to keep audio above the noise level by doing some form of Automatic Gain Control. This became critical as more and more cars got radios and road and vehicle noise made listening in cars less than pleasant.

So the main intent of processing is to enhance TSL, and it does that if properly implemented.

Not just that but, on FM, it's essential in restoring spectral balance that's thrown off by the effect of pre-emphasis.

The college station I worked at tried to make do with a UREI limiter. It made the station sound tinny and shrill, "in the mud" because of suppressing peaks that were exaggerated by pre-emphasis and then pushed down further by receiver de-emphasis. We raised money for an Optimod 8000. When our engineer put it in, it made a world of difference.

Hot 95.7 existed when Top 40 was more appropriate than it is today but still had some songs about partying and drinking immoral sex etc.

It appears that 107.5/106.9 did some tweaking as well. A definite improvement.
