City News Ottawa No More

From John Mielke and Blast The Radio

City News Ottawa is no more, people laid off, 1310 AM is going off the air permanently - Rogers will return the license to the CRTC.
The Country format formerly on 101.1 FM returns as of 1pm today.

Country is already being heard on the stream this afternoon

I don't understand why these companies in Canada want to shut down their 50kw stations rather than try to sell them. First, Bell Media with 4 out of their 6 AM stations being 50kW and now Rogers. I mean who in Ottawa wouldn't want a station as powerful as CIWW was. The least Rogers can do is sell it.

I know the flagship Global and CityTV stations rebroadcast from their flagship Toronto station with a full power relays but it sucks now that Bell Media and the CBC as the only TV and radio outlets in the nation's capital.

They dont wanna sell it to competition that coudl eat away at their revenue, plus AM's are incredibly expensive to operate and maintain, especially if theyre directional

Rogers has lot of options for it's 92.3 frequency. Either revive the Jack FM brand in Ottawa, the Sonic brand used in both Edmonton and Vancouver or the AC format used by CHFI, CHFM, CHYM, etc.

I wonder if 92.3 fm can increase their power to match with their sister station. 101.1fm. I doubt it since CTRC frown upon 101.1 being an Ottawa station instead of smith falls

I think your doing the opposite, 92.3 covers the capital unlike 101.1 which is more or less like a repeater covering the lower parts of the capital

Too bad Moses Zaminer didn't buy CIWW-1310 to make it a simulcast of Toronto's CFZM-740, perhaps with a handful of local programs (news and traffic updates, a local public affairs show for Ottawa, etc.).,

Besides, I think the "Zoomer Radio" format could go nationwide across Canada.

I really would like to know how much money 1310 was losing as an all-news outlet. If they were generating any income at all, why not keep it going on 1310 and leave it AM? CKWX in Vancouver is AM, and they pull respectable ratings. Obviously, engineering costs are problematic, but if it’s still profitable, I don’t think I’d throw in the towel completely.

In a worse case scenario, I wonder if they could have also streamlined the operations even further and used more content from Toronto. Vancouver and Calgary share a ton of content these days.

Moses has an FM translator for 740, he doesn’t need or want another AM station. People all over Canada and elsewhere can stream Zoomer Radio online, it already is “nationwide across Canada” online.

"The new brand is also being heard over the air on 92.3 CJET-FM Smiths Falls ON following last week’s moves that shuttered “City News 1310/101.1” CIWW Ottawa, while “Country 92.3” CKBY-FM moved to the 101.1 frequency. The “Santa Radio” brand will lead into a new format after the holidays."

92.3 CJET is Class B while 101.1 CKBY is a Class C1 station. 92.3 barley reaches Ottawa while 101.1 covers ottawa.

Ottawa is the #4 market in Canada (behind Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver). You'd think as the nation's capital, it could support two commercial News/Talk stations, the CIWW 1310/CKBY 101.1 combo along with CFRA 580.

The Washington DC market has #1 NPR affiliate WAMU (similar to the CBC Radio One outlet CBO-FM, which is also usually #1), #2 all-news combo WTOP-FM 103.5 and WFED 1500 (similar to CKWW and CKBY) and #8 talk station WMAL-FM (similar to CFRA).

Yes, Ottawa is smaller than Washington. But it supports an NHL team and a CFL team. It's sad to hear it has lost CIWW and now has a second Country station instead of a News/Talk outlet.

I’m still surprised that it makes more financial sense to shut down arguably one of the best AM signals in town rather than try to sell it or put some sort of half assed programming on it.

The same could be said about the Vancouver market, where CKST and CFTE were shut down. Both stations were shut down, yet the transmitter site is fairly state of the art.

It's a shame, though it's no different than what's been happening in both the US and Canada for years. Outside of the largest markets, Canada doesn't offer much on AM at all. It has been transitioning AM's to FM for roughly 20 years now.

Most every AM on both sides of the border has a rich history. The listeners, however, moved on a long time ago. If the history mattered as much to the average person as it does to us, those stations wouldn't be in their current tattered states.

I think they made the smartest decision in shutting it down, rather than limp along with “half assed programming”.
