What was Apex AM

WDRC's original FM station on Meriden Mountain in CT went on the air as an experimental AM Apex station on a higher band in 1936, before becoming an FM station at that transmitter site. It looks like only a handful of stations tried AM Apex for only a few years in the mid 30s. How did AM Apex compare to AM and the obviously better FM?

From the WDRC tribute site regarding West Peak at Meriden Mountain.
