Personalities on WDLW

Afternoon drive is hosted by the owner. It's a pretty low rent operation, especially when the operation budget was cut and personel were laid off after the station was sold in 2021.

It’s honestly sad to see how badly that station and WOBL have fallen apart under the current ownership. It feels like a matter of time before they both fall silent.

The truth is that a suburban 500 watt AM with a 90 watt translator at 161 feet has little or no chance of survival.

And you’re absolutely correct. They and WOBL lived on borrowed time for the longest time because Doug Wilber (the prior owner) knew how to pound the pavement and could do any trade or ad sale.

The cutbacks started in early 2021 as the pandemic collapsed the ad market. It was a terrible time to sell the stations but the Wilbers saw the writing on the wall. I wonder sometimes if Gary Tollet (current owner) had any idea what he was getting into.

WDLW has plenty of local advertiser support. Fligner's market is one. There's a lawyer or law firm that I heard a couple of days ago. Nick Abraham Ford is on a good amount. During the ramp up to the Nov. 7th election, Lorain County Right To Life had messages aired. So, the rates must be affordable.

A lot of that is sustaining tradeout. Insiders say that Tollett is in way over his head. His solution seems to be to fire key people and then try to do everything himself.

The vast majority of those ad accounts were set up with the Wilbers in charge. Rates can be dirt cheap if they are distressed AMs with tiny FM translators and poor ownership.

Unless you know the ad rates, the number of clients is immaterial. If they are doing a package of 10 spots a day for $300 a month, they are selling $1 dollar spots.

And isnt WDLW missing a tower or something else that caused them to operate non directionally at lowerp ower?

I swear i read that somewhere

Looks liek it was WOBL but that was back in 20202 and the FCC LMS wont pull up the application
