Christmas programming

Small market start dates? Who's on first?

In Grays Harbor... Sunny 102.1... Thurs Dec 1... 8am

KKSR-95.7 Walla Walla flipped on Nov 11 for the Tri-Cities (Santa 95.7)
KARY-100.9 Grandview flipped on Nov 25 for Yakima
KQBG-99.5 Rock Island flipped sometime during Thanksgiving week.

I have probably mentioned this before. In the 70’s and 80’s most stations would start Christmas music about 1-2 weeks out. And it was usually not back to back until Christmas Eve day. How times have changed! Now if you do Christmas you start in November and we are talking about “all Christmas”. Obviously someone figured out this is the format winning strategy. Stations today are better off playing no Christmas music than the idea of throwing 2-3 per hour, the way it used to be.

I know

In Spokane, KEEH 104.9 is airing Shine Christmas on its HD3 subchannel. The HD3 only appears between November and mid-January then it's gone the rest of the year. I'm keeping an eye on KISC 98.1 as it'll probably be next in Spokane.

In Tri-Cities, I don't think anything is airing Christmas music yet but KKSR 95.7 will probably be first (at which time it'll be removed from my presets until January).

Yakima still believes in keeping the turkey in Thanksgiving and Santa/birth of Jesus in the CHRISTMAS season. AKA, Cherry FM flipping the day after Thanksgiving. Unlike many large and mid-sized markets...the soccer moms who go ho-ho-ho early have to stream Mariah Carey for these first few weeks of November. Huzzah!
We also have Positive Life Radio flipping around the same time to a Christmas format, with a mix of Christian artists and some secular classics. But I don't think Mariah Carey airs on that network.
KKSR usually flips about a week before Thanksgiving, I think...and then you have the 102.3 translator in Tri (93.5 Royal City) flipping as well.

First flip in eastern WA is (as always) KISC-98.1 Spokane, happened on Friday.
Cherry FM in Yakima decided they were not waiting until Black Friday this time around. They flip 11/20 at 8AM. Guess they stay off the presets for a week or so :)

Up in my state, we start playing 1 song per hour in hours we have local live djs (7am to 9am, 12nopon to 5pm) or locally automated music, starting DEcember 1st

We amp it up to 2 songs per hour December 10th.

Then The week leading up to christmas, well likely air local radio plays, a school production and some syndicated stuff., We then go all christmas Dec 23rd at 4pm till 5am DEcember 26th when the bbc world service resumes our regular programming

When are you running the local radio plays and what will they be?

No idea and no idea just yet.. what and when they aree all depends on how many total radio plays we end up getting

KSWW - Sunny 102.1 - We did a 24 hour tease last Sunday Nov 12. Typical response: Husband - love it! Wife - hate it!
We will begin for real the day after Thanksgiving at 12:01 AM.
A few years ago, with our 98.5 startup we were the "Christmas station" for quite a while, then we sold the station to EMF.
More years back, with our 93.7 startup, we plugged in bird sounds from a small clock radio, ran that one for quite a while... I think there was an LPFM or non-com translator in Gig Harbor that was disturbed about interference from birds!

Looks like KKSR/Tri-Cities flipped this morning. Heard their usual fuzzy signal here, playing Band-Aid "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and immediately changed the channel on my way to a substitute teaching job at a nearby school. Bah humbug to pre-Thanksgiving Xmas music!

In Seattle, 94.1 and 106.9 also flipped. Yay for all the soccer moms and school bus drivers out there, I guess?🎄
