Yep! The article I saw earlier today called it a major event and had a piture of a bright red northern lights display in Bageria, which would be pretty far south for that sort of thing.Auroral effects last night
Thanks for the tip. 740 was completely blank . If anything, conditions this morning before dawn were even worse than the previous night. CJBC, which is diplexed with CFZM was also missing. But the oddity (sort of) was that WJR was in. It was absent the night before.Cyberdad, I would check 740 tonight for KTRH. What other "strong-ish" TX/LA signals are you really looking for?
In north suburban Chicago: Last night I wanted to listen to CJOB 680 for a little while before going to sleep. (They come in pretty well about 4 or 5 nights per week.) Instead I heard a Spanish-speaking station coming in quite well with only moderate fading. At 1:00 AM CST I clearly heard their ID: Radio Nacional de Colombia, Barranquilla. This really surprised me! I presume this was an after-effect of this past weekend's solar activity. They ID'ed a couple more times, but their signal lasted only about five minutes and soon 680 became a jumble of weak signals. I should've tuned around looking for more oddities, but it was already way past my bedtime!
Setup here is an Icom R-75 receiver with a 1-meter square wire loop (fixed orientation) w/ preamp on the 2nd floor balcony of a condo building. Its orientation should favor the north/south direction, assuming the pattern isn't too messed up by proximity to my building.
KTRH is a tough haul if its pattern isn't aimed at you. When I lived in Missouri, I was only ever able to get it in the winter when there was about a 45-minute window between local sunset and Houston sunset; hence, KTRH was on daytime pattern which has a little bump toward "deep east" Texas. In Chicagoland, you might get a one-hour window. That bump goes away for KTRH's nighttime operation. Otherwise in Missouri at night it was a mix between KRMG and what was then CBL. Never heard Texarkana. There's a lot on that channel at night. Here in Denver, KVOR Colorado Springs is on the channel day and night, not particularly strong at either time, but always there.Although KTRH is pretty much a regular at the place where we stay on the Gulf Coast, I don't think I;ve ever heard it here in the Chicago area. Although others have.be b KRMG turns up from time here at home under CFZM, possibly also blocking whatever might be left od KTRH.
Craig, did they announce the simulcast on the air or in their ID? I was in Farmington (NM) four weeks ago for the eclipse and didn't hear any indication that KENN was simulcasting on anything other than K221DJ, its local translator. KVFC can be received daytimes in Farmington but it can also be easily nulled out. I might try for it here in Denver sometime, though KVOR is pretty much a constant presence on 740 here, day and night.New log last night! I assume they were on day power.
740 - KVFC CO, Cortez; with an American heritage vignette under and over KCBS at 2359 PT 11/9/23, followed by most of an ID "News-Talk 740 KVFC..." and into Fox News. Semi-auroral conditions with no sign of CBX, and at first I assumed this was just KBRT! NEW #833, assumed 1KW at 886 miles. They simulcast on KENN-1390 in Farmington, which I have also heard.
On the west side of Molokai in Maunaloa I could still hear the Kauai stations 93.5, 95.9, 96.9 and 103.1. They were still listenable at the Kalaupapa Lookout.MEDIA=facebook]6983448408389353[/MEDIA] FM bandscan recorded near Kumimi Beach on the east side of Molokai. 21.107382, -156.744734 Wednesday afternoon 11-1-2023.
From their websites, I compared the KENN and KVFC broadcast schedules (at least on weekdays):Ooh, maybe it isn't. But I know KVFC was airing Fox news. At first I thought I was just getting KBRT from a strange direction (SSE)...not so much! Still need the other 740 in CO, KVOR Colo. Springs.
Quite impressive. I was probably a little closer in Oakland, but also too close to 1260 KSFB and never heard KXBX there as a result. I could always get a steady, if weak 1280 KWSX from Stockton. Some impressive (to me) daytime DX:
I was sitting in the car wasting time for a bit, so I thought I'd scan around the radio dial to see if there was anything interesting.
Sure enough, when I hit 1270, which is usually empty aside from some slop from 1260, instead of the usual static, I heard some music. I couldn't make it out, so I listened for awhile to see if I could catch an ID. After a few minutes, I heard a barely audible but mostly readable ID i wasn't expecting to hear: KXBX 1270 AM and 96.5 FM, Lakeport!
There must be some residual skywave activity or something else I don't understand, because 500 watts from ~130 miles and at least two mountain ranges away is pretty impressive (again, to me)!

Yes. Super impressive!Quite impressive. I was probably a little closer in Oakland, but also too close to 1260 KSFB and never heard KXBX there as a result. I could always get a steady, if weak 1280 KWSX from Stockton.
I wonder if you're getting a little bit of enhancement from San Pablo Bay. How well do you get Napa's KVON (1440)? I could barely get it in Oakland.Yes. Super impressive!
I'm on the other side of the hills, sort of southeast of Richmond, southwest of Martinez and north of Lafayette/Orinda/Moraga, so KSFB must be somewhat weaker here.
c
Maybe so.I wonder if you're getting a little bit of enhancement from San Pablo Bay. How well do you get Napa's KVON (1440)? I could barely get it in Oakland.
Short answer for now is yes, they're in stereo. I've got some recordings made in Sonoma back in August from a Sony SRF-A100. For a while KVON seemed to be undermodulating but it sounded OK in August.KVON is very iffy. Sometimes I think can receive it (I've never confirmed it), but most of the time not.
I do want to confirm that it's broadcasting in C-QUAM stereo. It allegedly does, though I doubt it (as far as I know, my tiny Part 15 AM jukebox is the only C-QUAM station in the entire state of California (an excellent point to brag about!)).
But I can't prove whether KVON is using C-QUAM or not if I can't receive it reliably, can I?
