NFL Flex scheduling

New York Jets at Las Vegas Raiders is the Sunday Night game tonight. It's odd that this game wasn't flexed out for a better one.

Detroit vs LA Chargers, Cleveland vs Baltimore, Houston vs Cincinnati, Washington vs Seattle all were very entertaining games. Any one of those would have been better than Jets vs Raiders. Even though the Jets represent the #1 TV market, without Aaron Rodgers the lustre is dimmed considerably...

The actress from “Heidi” did a tongue-in-cheek reminder of the “Heidi Bowl,” featuring tonight’s teams back in 1968. Since NBC executives made the decision, leading to nationwide indignation, NBC had fun with it.

This switching from the ending minutes of the game to the movie back in ‘68 prompted tens of thousands of angry phone calls and led to the rule that states games must be allowed to finish, unless it’s a rout, and if there is another more-interesting game in progress. However, since that was a key game, common sense says that the game should have been covered to its conclusion.

What in the world does that have to do with flexing NFL games in 2023?

Breathe deeply through your N95 mask, dude, and relax. It's just a harmless diversion from the topic, and since it involved not only last night's broadcast and the two teams involved, it's about as close to being on topic as can be. I'm sure someone will be around to explain that it's still too early in the season for flexing games.

It was merely a reaction to what tbolt909 said, saying that another game would have perhaps worked better than last night’s matchup. Would I have preferred another game? You betcha.
The "Heidi Game" was long ago, but NBC got scorched by upset football fans. Back then, you didn't have streaming. You had 3 networks and PBS. NBC thought the game would over by 7pm (most games back then were played in under 3 hours). They could have easily delayed the start of the movie, but they made a bad decision in haste.

As for "Flexing", last nights game could have been switched. Monday Night games are now eligible to be switched out. I'm not sure how the league and the TV networks decide when to move games...

Except for the last week of the season moving a game requires a 12 day notice. The last week of the season is a 6 day notice.

Did anyone getting Giants-Cowboys on FOX get switched to Commanders-Seahawks once the NY-DAL game was an obvious blowout? Here in Houston we’re one of the “non-pullout” markets for the Cowboys so we were stuck with the game to the very end, while Commanders-Seahawks went down to the wire.

nope. God forbid why would FOX do that? Cant piss off all those Cowboy fans
I'm in Mankato, MN and we had it until the end and according to reports they did not move folks to a closer game

The decision was made by NBC execs to stay with the game. That never reached network control . That was how Curt Gowdy explained it

Dallas is the networks darling. They are almost always in the 4pm National slot (when not playing on Sunday Night or Monday Night). They are the only team that gets this treatment no matter their record. New England has disappeared from the featured games now that Brady is gone and the team is struggling...

Oh I know. Hence the rolling eyes.
This week they are on the early game.

That's only because they are playing the lowly Carolina Panthers. I checked the schedule. The only 1pm game Dallas has played this year so far was against the Rams. Obviously, they are a ratings draw (even though many people despise them). They haven't been to a Super Bowl since the 90s...

The Cowboys will be in the Super Bowl, America’s Team is on the comeback trail! I hope they never get flexed.
