Format Changes 2024

No, that’s not it. ‘Rolling tape’ refers to an aircheck.
"Rolling tape" refers to any time in the past that a boar op/engineer started to record, whether it was an interview, a commercial or whatever.

The board op would either say or signal "rolling tape" to signify "recording" had started. Was also used in TV any time something was being put on the VTR.

Like lots of antiquated terms, it's still used by veterans when recording even digitally.

Airchecks are usually done automatically with a secondary device connected to the switch of the studio mike to capture the content every time the mike is opened. It usually includes the full "line out" audio so the PD can hear the record fades and intros and other items that are part of the audio when the mike is opened.

This could be closer to what I am suggesting. New Talk won't be like what I think a "talk" station would be, but I am not in the demographic New Talk would be going after.

As I said, that's what WKTU does. Their hosts are more talkative and interactive than the hosts at Z100. The Fan is shifting their presentation from aging boomer hosts to younger hosts who are more involved in fantasy teams and topics the under-40s talk about. So at some point, you may seen that demo start to increase there. Someone mentioned Barstool Sports, and I'm starting to hear a lot of that influence at The Fan.

8 of the top 23 songs including the #1 song of the yr on the 2023 Billboard Hot 100 year end chart were also country hits.

Perhaps another indication that an adult variety format, such as Jack, which plays music across various formats, could work here.

Except, as we've said, the companies likely to do it already own too many stations here. It's not a format for someone that only owns one station in a market.

Okay, so here's a scenario. Jeff Smulyan comes down in price enough for Audacy to buy 98.7. Audacy, in turn, sells 94.7 back to Family Radio, which, in combination with 92.7, now are able to cover the full market again. Let's say the numbers are $40MM and $20MM respectively. For a net of $20MM, Audacy can now reach the entire market with 98.7 and can either take a shot at making their "The Block" programming successful by reaching the whole market, or pop a format onto 98.7 that's more suitable to the full market. Family still has $31MM to earn interest on, and with the 94.7+92.7 combo, they can see if their message will get enough donations to sustain itself, supplemented with the investment interest. Everyone comes out a winner, nobody has to dig $50MM deep into their pocket, and even Emmis gets the number they probably expected to net in their most realistic projections.
Putting the Block on 94.7 would also increase the Long Island coverage of NY Country on their HD2

The Block is already on the 94.7 signal, as is "NY Country" on 94.7/HD2. I think you meant to type 98.7, which is what I said above. In which case, yes, if they relocated that HD2 over to 98.7, it would put a stronger signal over Queens, Nassau, and possibly the westernmost part of Suffolk. (Though I wouldn't bet the mortgage money on that last part.)

Not normally a WKTU listener, I did yesterday, and at least throughout the afternoon, I don't think anybody would mistake it for anything other than a good AC music station. They did seem to take a few requests, but the requestor was not on the air. In the formatted world that radio lives in, someone who tunes in expects to hear what the station advertises itself as: WOR - talk, WINS - news, Z-100 music. Most morning drive music will have extended breaks from tunes, but that's also expected. A talk station like what I am thinking of will be primarily conversation designed for the under 40.

I also streamed The Men's Room, and in what would have been mid-afternoon, they were indeed talking about non-political stuff, including "which comics did you like as a kid." They also had a trivia contest, divided into the "drunk or sober" teams. They had men and women calling in. But then they did go back to music, so it is close, but not exactly what I was thinking of. On the other hand, if it works... as I mentioned above, the New Talk won't necessarily be what I think a "talk" station would be.

The problem for me is with the talk is its basically girl talk.
On the rare time sports does come up they are totally lost.
One time the girl was happy the jets won at the end of the yr but real jets fans wanted a loss since they were already out & wanted higher draft picks.

I heard a Country station from a Western state (don't recall which one) that had brief chit-chat with listeners between songs. I think it worked because the host was skilled in keeping the conversations very short (maybe 30 seconds) and humorous. I would have been much less inclined to listen if the talk went on for an extended period of time.

I have hopes. But being real I can’t imagine any earth shattering format changes in 2024. Sadly, Even the fledgling stations seem content with what they are airing 😞

My bad … i meant 98.7 for the better HD and analog coverage

If they throw it in cheap, sure. Let's remember it's a Buyers market, there's not a line up of Buyers at 50 million for an FM in NY.
I don't think Emmis will get $50 million. Where would I be missing something here:

WPLJ went with a group of 6 stations in 2019, 2 class A stations KFFG San Jose, WXTL Syracuse, 2 class B WPLJ and WRQX DC, and 2 class C WZAT Savannah and WYAY Atlanta for $103 million, an average of $17 million. Since they were not equal properties, would it be unreasonable to figure the lesser went for around 12 million, the middling around 17, and the choicest for maybe slightly under 30 million? Radio interest has not gone up in the last two years, and 98.7, with a similar footprint to 95.5 might have to go as a stand alone.

Also, not knowing what Federated Media's balance sheet or interest is, might they buy WLIB and reverse what Inner City did and restore WOWO to 50kw? If clear channels are not moved around, Ft Wayne would be the only candidate on 1190.

Lance previously did a pretty complete analysis on this in September. He also compares it to the recent sale of WBLS.

One thing to know about WPLJ is that in its final years under Cumulus, billings had dropped to $10 million, which is half of what it billed under Citadel.
