Format Changes 2024

Perhaps one of the suburban A/C stations, such as WHUD, could mix in more of the pop Country sounding songs.
Singer Kelly Clarkson has a new channel on satellite radio. She plays mainly A/C type music, but also spins a few Country tunes each hour.

They appear to be doing that now. Among the Christmas songs they playing are songs by Faith Hill and Martina McBride.

It's very likely they played the Luke Combs version of Fast Car earlier this year. But playing a couple of country songs doesn't replace a station that plays the full variety of artists that a country station would play.

It's like telling alt fans they should be happy because an AC station plays one or two popular ballads by alt artists, and that should cover for the loss of 92.3.

Of course fans of Country music, or any genre, would prefer a station devoted to their music.
But an A/C station mixing in a few compatible Country songs each hour could pick up some listeners that miss WNSH 94.7, and expose others to songs and artists from the genre they didn't expect to enjoy hearing.
As we know, A/C stations play numerous Christmas tunes by artists that are not on their usual playlist. So the few Country holiday songs the station has been airing are not necessarily an indication they are playing a significant amount of Country music during the rest of the year. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Lite FM currently airs holiday songs by the Country artists mentioned in the above post.

Would you sit through music you don't like on the off chance that you might hear a song you like?

Conversely, if you're an AC listener, a format that is built around FAMILIAR music, would you sit through something you didn't expect?

That is not what AC is about. These days AC stations are playing even fewer currents than they ever did.

I remember when Nash FM played Ed Sheeran years ago randomly. I love Ed but his music doesn't belong on Country at all.

Thats not what he thinks:

“I talk about this to my wife all the time. I would love to transition into country,” he told the outlet. “I love the culture of it; I just love the songwriting. It’s just like, brilliant songs.”

He & Luke Combs played together at the ACM Awards

Either way I like his music. His song First Times was my wedding song. Radio needs to embrace his music he's been screwed over in recent albums. Sorry getting off topic my ADHD is kicking in. I think 98.7 will switch to either Adult Hits, Alternative, or Country. 94.7 should flip to something else where they can actually make money. Move The Block to 92.3. Has anyone tried AAA in NYC on Commercial FM radio before? I wonder if Pamal Broadcasting would buy 98.7 and make it AAA like the Peak on 107.1 (which has a horrendous signal).

Not likely. The potential owners will have their own agenda. Religion, politics, or some form of urban or Hispanic.

Nobody will spend money to lose money. The days of someone spending money to play music funded by :30 spots is over. White people will not sit through 15 or more minutes of commercials in exchange for music. So we need to stop coming up with conventional white people music formats as a possibility in NYC. Those days ended with Merlin and Cumulus. We all know the results.

Move The Block to 92.3.

WINS makes $30 million a year. They're staying at 92.

And Combs has said publicly that he's not looking to become a pop or even a crossover artist. It will be interesting to see if AC picks up on his new single, "Where the Wild Things Are," since the success of "Fast Car" must have gotten a good number of AC P1s who never listen to country radio interested in what else Combs has to offer.

They're not comparable. Fast Car was a familiar song with the AC demo. That's why it worked.

If Combs sings "Faithfully" or some similar 80s ballad, then AC will play it.

Gut instincts tell me Radio One gets it to put R&B back on 98.7

Remember, urban stations also have strong appeal with later generation Hispanics and those two groups make up about 44% of the market. Heck, one of the Urban stations has an Hispanic PD!

And of the 4 full signal stations, 2 are Urban, one is Churban and the other is Urban AC. The fifth, a lesser signal, is Urban Gold.

Not happening.

To what? Back to country and bill just as poorly prior to flipping?

WINS isn’t going anywhere.

Yes, RXP starting out.

Signal would be worth too much for them to buy.

Regardless of my personal distaste in country music, there is plenty of evidence where it's blending into other "traditional genres." On the SiriusXM front, they are blending it with rock music, with even Carrie Underwood having a country/rock themed hits channel. SiriusXM Hits 1 is playing songs by Hardy that were played months ago on Octane. It is a trend, of which I don't personally enjoy, but it can't be ignored.

Not a format change, but I predict WCBS adds more sports betting programming in overnights and weekends
Audacy -- assuming it still holds onto the station -- needs local clearance for its gambling-based BetQL sports network. With the Mets and Rutgers already on, 880 is a good candidate.

It’s going to sound weird on 880. But, it has to be done to keep 880 relevant since they’re not on FM.
