Since the Rangers are ditching Bally Sports after 2024

I wish the Mavericks, Rangers and Stars would do what the Rockets and Astros did and purchase the assets of Bally's Southwest and do an over the air deal with KDFW/KDFI or KTVT/KTXA like they had in the early 2000's. Would Sinclair sell the massive production facility in Las Colinas to the teams. I don't know how all the financials would work and who would have priority when all three are playing at the same time. It would be similar to the OTA deal that the Rangers did when LIN Broadcasting got the Rangers tv rights for KXAS/KXTX when the Ballpark in Arlington opened in 1994. Most of the games were on KXTX at that time.

A sign of things to come? It's only this one game (so far) but an indication that Bally is quietly shutting down its Southwest Extra channel?

no....That game is being moved to 21 because the Mavericks play on the main channel, and the Texas high school football championships will be on the plus channels.

Correct. However outside of the Mavericks “home” territory the HS playoffs will be on the BSSW “main” channel with the Stars on BSSW+. There have been similar situations in the past, including a rare Rangers/Mavericks/Stars conflict.

Would be nice if Spectrum would come to an agreement with the Astros so we could get them again on the cable system in the triangle. Only time we get them is when they play the Rangers, which is the primary team here, or they are on national TV

I think you will probably see the Rangers, Mavericks, and Stars look for broadcast partners. It does not help the teams to have few people able to see their games on TV, which is the case now with Bally. Broadcast stations have wide reach and good promotion. The era of massive rights fees from regional cable networks is likely over. However, if they work out a rights deal with maybe a split of advertising revenue they could probably take in something close to what they were getting with Bally.

i can see a race between WFAA, KXAS/Peacock, KTVT/KTXA/Paramount+, KDFW/KDFI, KDAF and maybe Amazon Prime Video, the new ESPN/Fox/TNT Sports streaming service or Netflix getting local rights of the games with NBA TV producing the Mavs games, NHL Network producing the Stars games, and MLB Network producing the Rangers games.

The ESPN/FOX and Turner streaming service is for national sports only, not local. The bankruptcy court has not signed off on the Diamond/Amazon.com deal, but if they do then Amazon.com may get into the local rights deals for streaming purposes and maybe find a OTA partner. Most of the games on the league channels(NBA, NHL, MLB) are rebroadcasts of the local rights holders broadcasts. WFAA could be a front runner in getting the local rights for one or two of the local sports teams, but not all three. The stations with duopolies have the best chance because they can clear the inventory and move programming around to make it work.

Dallas Stars now are most definitely out of Bally Sports for next season. IMO, like I see perhaps for the Texas Rangers, CBS Indy KTXA would be a perfect fit.
I have not found any confirmation of this story elsewhere, though the holiday may be holding up further info. The Stars have made a bunch of noise about a direct-to-consumer streaming service.

KTXA has run Stars games in the past when there has been a triple conflict, such as the rare occasions where the Stars, Mavericks and Rangers are playing at the same time.

Keep an eye on KPXD, as Scripps stations have some sports rights deals elsewhere in the country.

Local TV Deals in places

Mavericks-Tegna (WFAA/KFAA)
Stars-Victory+ (I guess their market research says that the streaming service only for local tv is the best route.)
Wings-????
Rangers-??????

Should Tegna make a run at the Rangers and Wings????

Various newspapers and sites reported the Rangers were exploring setting up their own RSN that they would own. I'm sure they are looking at multiple options, but some teams have their own RSN -- the Rockets and Astros each own 50% of their RSN, the Red Sox own 80% of the RSN they are on, co-owned Penguins own their RSN in Pittsburgh.... Doesn't mean it is easy to reach a deal as the Blackhawks, Bulls, and White Sox walked away from NBCS Chicago to form their own RSN, CHSN, that has an over the air reach, but has limited carriage on area cable systems.
