KBPO Port Neches Redux

I was listening the other day, and it seems that KBPO has flipped formats again. They seem to have abandoned the Salem affiliation, and have not returned to Spanish-language religious music. The audio seems to be low, and the coverage is limited during the day, and non-existant during the night. I'm not sure what their night power is, but they are totally obliterated by distant stations.

I'm not sure whether they are entertaining an ownership change, but I'm of the opinion that music on AM is a non-starter. News/Talk and Sports seem to be the dominant formats on AM, and they appear to have abandoned the News/Talk format.

It’s either off the air or broadcasting the new dead air format.
I guess that'd make it "Keesler's Big Put  Off" nowadays.

What's the programming now, @Engineering ? You stated that it's currently playing music.

Was able to pick it up this morning. Some sort of third tier conservative / conspiracy based talk network or shows with ads for wacky companies that feed into conspiracy theories. Might be perfect for Vidor and the surrounding area.

Sounds like Alex Jones to me. Except he airs in the evenings, not the mornings.

Listened for awhile this afternoon -

Prior to 2 PM several commercials including one from Dennis Prager shilling for a gold dealer.

No top of hour ID.

Dead air for about a minute.

News from “Townhall.com” that included several 🦇💩 crazy stories.

More dead air.

A show from “America First Network” featuring someone named Sebastian Gorka.

Doubt there’s an audience for this, but Bubba in Vidor may disagree.

Sounds like Salem to me. Does anyone know whether KBPO is an authorized Salem affiliate?

I was going to say that but it seems shady since they don’t seem to be an affiliate and so much of their operation seems unprofessional.
I don’t think it’s the sundicator’s responsibility to ensure the professional delivery of their content. They, like Westwood One and their other competitors, just provide the content and it’s up to the radio station to package that content in such a manner that it attracts listeners.

However, let’s just say that KBPO is just picking-up an Internet stream (as opposed to traditional satellite delivery), and are rebroadcasting it without authorization (a signed contract). And they are airing the content including all of the national paid spots, and none of the local avails (as you observed with the long periods of silence). This is a win for Salem, because they are covering a few more heads which increases billing.

The real question here is, can Salem justify increased billing without a valid contract in place? That would be fraudulent and unethical. Of course, what KBPO is doing is fraudulent and unethical.

We looked at this station many many years ago, when it was KUHD. What's really surprising to me is that it still exists. There appears to be a studio in Port Arthur, in a sketchy looking commercial area. When this facility was built back in the 60's, who were they trying to serve? Port Neches, the COL, isn't much, so I can only guess that revenue was supposed to come from Port Arthur and Beaumont? From Google Earth, the very remote transmitter site looks a lot better than it looked in person 30+ years ago.

would that have been when Billy James Hargis Jr was running the station?

KBPO is supported to stand for Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange. Yet it doesn’t cover Orange. So maybe it stands for Beaumont, Port Arthur Only.

Im curious how a marginal AM radio station can survive with no ad revenue. There must be another part of this story to be told.

I think when there was a KBPO FM in Beaumont it was a Big Bopper reference as he had been a DJ in the area in the 1950s.

I’m not certain if this is the same one. However, regardless as @DavidEduardo stated earlier regarding legacy San Antonio AMer KCOR, radio is not a museum, it’s a business. The business of radio is turning a profit

The current incarnation of KBPO does not seem to me to be positioned to make a profit, because the coverage is too limited and the program delivery is not of the quality where i would want to listen to them.
