Happy 50th Anniversary to Q~105

It was 50 years ago today at 6pm when Q~105 launched as Tampa Bay's newest Top 40 music station. No mention of anything about this on the air or on the website. Hopefully plans are underway for something like Beasley did for WMMR Philadelphia and WRIF Detroit. There should be enough in the budget after all of the recent layoffs, right? Maybe they'll play their first song ever at 6pm, If You're Ready (Come Go With Me) by the Staple Singers... probably not. How about You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch? I suppose not since they've stopped playing any Christmas music (including parodies) since Mason left. I guess we'll just have to settle for even more of The Greatest Hits of the 80's and More with MJ in the Morning. We'll just have wait and and find out.

Happy Holidays to All and Happy Anniversary to the Q.

I believe this Christmas was the first in Q105’s history that they did not play Christmas music. Last year at least they made a half-hearted attempt with a few hours on Christmas morning. But this year we got nothing. Even during the country era they played Christmas music.

Ehh, once you hit that 50+ mark, you tend to do things half-hearted. Like buying a bicycle for your grandson at Christmas and giving him a socket & wrench set and saying "YOU put it together." Or like in your mid 20s buying a spiffy new car for him/her and once your past that half century mark it's "Merry Christmas. Here's your tube of Preparation H. I'm going back to bed." Maybe Q105 figured it wasn't worth the effort due to minuscule ratings increase?

First song played was the Staple Singers "If You're Ready" At first I thought I was receiving BJ 105 from Orlando via tropo

Maybe. But there was a time when playing Christmas music wasn’t done for ratings increases. It was done as a gift to the listeners.
So true. There are still a few stations out there that celebrate the Holiday, not the money they can make because of the Holiday.

You gotta realize though this was before the days of multiple stations flipping to all Christmas in November and all the options we now have for listening to Christmas music on demand. I completely acknowledge the history of it on Q105 but times have simply changed. My guess is that "gift" left the building with Mason Dixon.

I do agree with you. Although “multiple stations” playing Christmas music didn’t seem to be an issue back then. I remember in the ‘80s and early ‘90s flipping around the dial on December 24th and hearing Christmas music on literally every local station except 98 Rock, 95ynf (although they did play an occasional Christmas rock song), and 93.3 after they became The Power Pig. As you said, times have changed.

I'll go back even further, to the 60s. I can remember listening to WLCY and WSUN and hearing Christmas songs sprinkled in among the regular tunes. [including a version of Silver Bells that I haven't ever heard since then and I have searched mightily for it.] They never played wall-to-wall Christmas stuff and they never played it until after Thanksgiving. Can't speaketh for the FM stations as we never had an FM radio in car or home and nobody was old enough to listen to that Beautiful Music stuff. I don't think we had an FM radio in our home until sometime in the early 70s.
