Countdown to Christmas is on

From what I’ve heard on air, I’m assuming Magic won’t go back to the AC format until Tuesday 1/2/24. They used to chop it at 12:01am on 12/26 but we know how they are with their Christmas music these days…

LOL - in Anderson and the 101.5 translator for Magic says “WYRD” on the RDS and is in mono 🤣 sounds like garbage.

WTCB has stopped jingling the bells, as has WBBQ down in Augusta. In Charlotte, WKQC and WLKO have as well. Only stations still playing Christmas music 24/7 are WXLY in Charleston (who is doing terribly also) and WSPA-FM.

My vote: WSPA should hire the displaced Earth FM air staff and bring back the 80s and 90s Throwbacks/The Greatest Hits on Earth format. Fix the Anderson translator, and I'd bet their ratings would double. Or triple. Earth beat them a few times even when they were on 98.9, as I recall. Right now, the GSP market is a wasteland, and it amazes me that some big stations have such truly horrible audio processing. It can't be that hard, can it?

Live and Local is what works, Earth FM made it work locally and regionally, doing something right, making a little go a long way. Its terrible that no one seems to wanna pick up the pieces. Big signal doesn't mean "popular" without a decent product. 104.9 WROO is another good example.

Local, yes.. absolutely.. im the first to champion that. Absolutely.

Live doesnt make it inherently better and i have some evidence better than anecdotal but not quite concrete that can disprove that

At the rate WSPA is going they might as well go ahead and play Christmas music through January 7th just to cover Orthodox Christmas as well. 😂

Wouldn’t put it past them. Is anyone keeping track of the length of all Christmas formats? WSPA-FM is going to definitely pass the 2 month mark which is insane. Almost all of its sister stations under Audacy switched a week or two later in November, and snapped back to their regular format on 12/26. This is just awful.

Also — regarding the sound - all of the Audacy Greenville stations sound bad. The HD’s used to sound decent, but 93.3 is distorted/clipping on the HD, 101.1’s HD is way too quiet when switching from analog, 106.3 sounds way too harsh. The analog signals all just sound like overprocessed noise. iHeart’s analog and HD’s sound great. Summit’s stations sound pretty good too, especially 98.5.

Well, well, well - at 10pm tonight, “today’s hits and yesterday’s favorites” returned with Maroon 5, just like Christmas music never happened.

Surprised they actually took it off a day earlier than last year 🤣

Well now the 2024 countdown to Christmas music on WSPA is on again. I wonder if they’ll bring back Christmas in July again this year lol.

Yep! I’m guessing another switch the day after Halloween again this year. Maybe a special weekend in the fall like they did last year but I can’t believe they’ll do the Christmas in July etc again since they didn’t last year. It only kills the numbers more!

All of this assuming WSPA-FM is still AC by the end of the year - they’re killing themselves with the Christmas music, and even though it’s finally over, back to the same stale playlist they had for 2022 and 2023. They never freshen anything up, I honestly don’t expect them to do much better than they have been. The Block’s 3 translators are solidly beating them. If Magic can’t get out of the 1’s, I could see The Block landing on 106.3. The Block on a C3 with solid GSP coverage plus keeping the 107.7 Anderson signal could cause Summit an even more massive headache with 98.1 and the languishing 99.5.

Isn't it already time to start it for next year?
We can certainly start speculating about which stations will do a Christmas in July gimmick, when in July it will start, and how long it will last. Maybe even suitable and unsuitable songs for the format.

i'll gladly play a few christmas tunes in the middle of summer! :)

I looked at the 12+ ratings for various markets. WKQC didn't do as well as usual but WLKO, which was also up, was also doing Christmas music. WSPA-FM was still in the dumpster. WMAG had spectacular numbers because it was the only station but WQMG (urban) still managed to do better.

WSPA-FM registered a 2.9 share, which is still low but almost a 1-point increase in the latest monthly. They generally never got a Christmas “bump” before but maybe this will help get them back on track - Radio Industry News, Radio Show Prep, Radio Promotions, Radio Station Data, Podcast News

I think Magic is sounding too much like B93.7, short by just a few years, and at the same time, also too much stuff that's already found on WROQ...Their playlist isn't all (enough) current and isn't all (enough) classic;

"Today's Hits and Yesterdays Favorites" seems to be exactly what is their big issue, in my opinion, and even WMYI kinda beats them in that case also playing most of the same stuff that's on there too, even though its still a cookie cutter station and not really unique for the market.

A real Classic Hits station or similar like a 90's to 2000's Hits focus, I think would really help, especially after losing Earth FM (and Awesome 99.5) recently. A station / playlist like WKVL 104.9 near Knoxville TN has a great variety and playlist that this market is desperately missing and in great need of...Thoughts?
