A Year After Heart Surgery, 'John Boy' Talks Retirement

Best wishes to John Boy. I remember when the John Boy and Billy Show began on WBCY-107.9 and later moved to WRFX-99.7. And then the era when Robert D. Raiford joined as the news reader and resident curmudgeon commentator. Fun times back then, entertaining radio wih a country, redneck vibe that played well in the southern markets and could be syndicated to both country and rock formats.

I remember when he was just John Boy on WBCY.

He and Billy left the station because he didn't really like the music. WRFX was a better fit.

I remember the show was only in the South when a Greensboro area country station started airing it. It was a step that would lead to the show being heard up north, because the feeling was no rock station in the north would do his type of show.

Ironically, that Country station flipped to Rock just two years later and kept John Boy and Billy for several more years.

I noticed that.
I read the digital replica of the print edition since they dont deliver west of Shelby anymore except Sunday. No more daily Observer in Greenville-Spartanburg, Asheville, Hendersonville and places in between. But good story nonetheless.

I'm worried I'll be next. I don't see many places where a paper is delivered in my area. One man took has black box down. It looked sort of like a mailbox but with no door and the word "Observer". There could be others getting a delivery who don't have those, but I don't see a lot of them.

And it just wouldn't be the same. I need to cut out photos or obituaries or major articles, though I don't keep as many as I used to. Printing an article on a sheet of paper just isn't the same.

I'm sure there are some affiliates in the north, but it seems iHeart Classic Rockers there are taking Bob and Tom.
