The right's holders normally pay the broadcasters. The team's have a relationship with the right's holder and usually some wording in the contract to approve or have some say in who is selected and sometimes how the team is reflected on the air. That doesn't mean they have to white wash anything just not go crazy on a player or a coach etc. The flagship usually sounds like a fan. There are a few teams who retain their rights and build and sell their own network but in radio it's few and far in between due to the huge risks involved in selling spots with multi year sports contracts. It's usually more lucrative to not take the risk. Much more common in TV like here with NESN. NESN was originally a partnership between the Red Sox and Cable but a few years back the Red Sox bought out their partner. The Celtics I think have a partnership with Comcast for their broadcasts on Comcast SportsNet. In those scenarios the teams probably have much more control.

The company that owns the Red Sox has 80% ownership of NESN. The remaining 20% has been the company that owns the Bruins. NESN has essentially been that way since its inception. It hasn't been owned by any cable company.

You are correct that Comcast owns NBC Sports Boston, which has broadcast rights for the Celtics, and has since the channel was Sports Channel New England. They also had rights to the Hartford Whalers, before the team moved and became the Carolina Hurricanes. NBC Sports Boston has changed ownership between cable companies and FOX over the years.

And now Audacy heading for Ch 11 acc to radioinsight
>>As part of the restructuring, Audacy expects to drop its debt from approximately $1.9 billion down to $350 million. The company is expecting the bankruptcy court to hold a confirmation hearing in February
