alt 98.7

Living on the right coast, I am disgusted with our alt station WRFF and was searching for a good formatted signal. Last week scanning my sat radios I found alt 987 a great alt station. Two questions, they keep stating NEW ALT are they brand new did they take the place of another station that changed format and why do they keep playing Hoobastank - The Reason, like it was new....unless its a filler for us listening on line...thanks

No, Alt 98.7 has been around since 2013---and actually, longer. They had the same format but called themselves "98-7" in the fall of 2007 and have bounced between "Modern AC" and alternative since 1995, as "Star 98.7".

A lot of stations hang onto "The new (station name)" well beyond any real newness.

No idea about the Hoobastank track, but it could be covering up local commercials for online listening.

That's a funny question. The song is almost 20 years old, but it's the band's only #1. So stations play it a lot. In fact the song charted again in 2021 and appeared at #25 on the year-end alternative chart. So some newbies might date it to then. But it's their most recent actual hit.

Where Ryan Seacrest found his first LA home.

Heck, KSCA in LA began in the late 90's and ran for over a decade as "La Nueva" (The New One) and just last year decided to return to that heritage name. They say that "everyday is new" because almost all shifts are personality / entertainment / humor driven.

The woody show is the longest running morning show on the 98.7 frequency that I am aware of. Ten years in just a few months.

I really liked Jamie and Danny on star 98.7 Mr Danny bonaduche that is. But they weren't there that long. As an alt rock fan that listens to both Kroq and alt 98.7 I have never heard the hoobastank song played on alt 98.7 it probably only is online.

I count 4 spins last week on Mediabase, 3 of them in evenings. Mediabase is supposed to monitor the air signal.

Just for s&gs, I checked WRFF, and they played The Reason SIX times last week! More than KYSR. So there you go.

They say "LA's new alternative" almost to make it sound like they play new alternative music. but it is very gold based, playing alt songs from the golden age of alternative 90s-2000s

That's what the radio format is, if you look at the majority of alternative stations nationally. The reason for that is because those are consensus songs that everyone loves. The audience isn't united about the new music and how much of it they like.

In a Tik Tok world, all songs can be “new” at any given time, no matter the year. Anyone remember a certain song from the 1980s that charted last year after Stranger Things?

I know. It's sad, I hear some good new stuff from time to time on alt nation and it never makes it to radio :(
