SBS Buys KROI for $7.5 million

I want a signal that can be heard in most of the city it serves without a coat hanger on the end of my radio antenna...
Hey now, KTHT had an impeccable signal…

…in Cleveland, Splendora, and Livingston. Where it was the only station that came up on seek. 😂

And it wasn’t bad in the Beaumont area either. Of course since the new owners took over it is no longer programmed in my radio, joining 103.7.

106.9 is also super strong there. And 92.3

If the SBS sale falls through you might see KROI going for $3-4M.
I believe the tower alone cost over $1 million. Is it part of the deal, or was it sold to a vertical real estate company for management?

Thread bump: SBS settles with Voz Media over the TV asset sale failure. This should help SBS make the remaining payments on its acquisition of KROI. Next installment due March 29.

If the settlement is substantial, and with their cashflow, SBS should be in a position to close on this acquisition now.

Of course that would depend on when VOZ actually has to fork over the cash. It’s possible they would be on a payment schedule, just like SBS is doing for the KROI deal.

Still assuming a July 1 closing for 92.1 with a format flip shortly afterwards, if not the same day.

July 4 is a common date for format flips, albeit not a particularly fitting one for Regional Mexican!

Probably the best idea for a July 4 format flip was WTOK in Puerto Rico, where they switched to mostly American English-language CHR! I wonder if any stations switched to country on a 4th of July.

WLEY flipped to RM on July 4th.
Actually, it was still WYSY-FM then (I recorded the ID given in Spanish), and there were two flips: one April 14, 1997* at noon when the oldies format gave way to the engineer's collection of CDs, a/k/a "Bill's Format", a stunt that got some notice, and then July 4, 1997, when the regional Mexican format started.

(* SBS actually took over a couple of days before that.)

Third installment payment of $1M due today on the SBS purchase of KROI. Assuming scheduled payments have been made, $3.9M of the $7.5M sale price has now been paid down, with three more installments left.

RO/SST will have to file a second Extension of Consummation request with the FCC by April 9 to push past the planned July 1 closing date.

Likely three months away from a new format on 92.1.
