Cleveland Radio Holiday Ratings 2023

Cleveland Radio Holiday Ratings 2023
Majic and Star both rode that Christmas music horse as long and as far as they could and it paid off.

WZAK gained some traction from people wanting a break from the yuletide festivities.

92.3 The Fan got a nice Browns playoffs bump.

Kiss has closed the gap somewhat with Q 104, and 107.3 got a little boost from people looking for a Xmas alternative (pardon the pun)

5 iHeart + 3 Audacy + 1 Urban One + 1 Ideastream = top 10

Interesting to see if Star gains traction from its Christmas ratings.

KISS and Q both seem to be doing better than Z.

Current-based Urban radio has a problem. The versions which most listeners to that format want to hear often can't be played on the radio unless they are heavily censored/altered.

And WMMS last in iHateMedia's Cleveland FM (non-HD) station cluster...

I know Christmas music is not their forte, but when a station is a shell of it's former self, something needs to be overhauled.

WMMS is doing well with Rover and Alan Cox, along with the Cavs and Guardians programming. Music is increasingly becoming an afterthought though.

KISS is showing some improvement and The Lake continues to do well.

WMMS made the decision over a decade ago to become a "mancave" station - mixing hot talk, sports, and rock - and it has done them very well, as they have had stability with the Rover/Cox/Guards/Cavs core, with rock filling in the gaps

We all remember the dumpster fire that was the morning merry-go-round from 1994-2008 with the wasteland of bodies between Jeff & Flash and Rover.

I think people complaining about WMMS are primarily pining for the days of yesteryear

Jeff & Flash, Matt The Cat, and Kid Leo, with the late great Len "Boom" Goldberg and Murray Saul (GOTTA GOTTA GOTTA GET DOWN!) were the 1927 Yankees...basically unicorns.

That isn't gonna be repeated no matter how much you try, or how much anybody pines for it.

Different time, different era.

I don't know if it has done them "very well" as the two drive-time talk shows essentially prop up the whole station, along with the sports play-by-play. But financially, without much of a staff beyond those two shows, they are probably in the black.

Respectable ratings + lineup stability + $$ = doing very well in 2024 radio

1984 radio and 2024 radio are 2 completely different animals.
