Monmouth/Ocean Thunder 106 strikes again! Attempting to shut down a translator on 106.3

nd2023

Banned
Here’s an example of how a translator could work on paper but not in real life. Thunder 106.3, WKMK, is the only country station in the New York area since 2021 when Audacy flipped 94.7 to classic hip hop. They regularly show up in the NYC ratings, and especially in the Middlesex-Somerset-Union ratings. W300CZ 107.9 filed a minor mod to move to 106.3, move to Perth Amboy, and change its call letters to W292GG. W292GG keeps its interfering contour away from the 60 dbu of WKMK. It works on paper.

However, in real life, there will be a lot of interference. A lot of people commute from the shore towns to north Jersey and listen to Thunder 106 the whole way. They’ll stop listening if the translator signs on and interferes with their favorite station. There are no other country stations there, 92.5 from Philly and 96.1 from Allentown are weak.

In the past, Press was successful in getting W292DV 106.3 in Manhattan to shut down. It moved to 107.9 and became W300EI. As an added bonus from the listener complaints back then, they also got the FCC to shut down a pirate on 106.3 in Brooklyn. Now they are soliciting listener complaints again. Press will be filing an informal objection against the translator basically wiping out Thunder 106 in Middlesex county and Staten Island.

It's ludicrous that they thought they could jam in a translator on 106.3 there. Thunder 106 comes in strongly throughout the area.

Meanwhile, 107.9 WOLD-LP has a construction permit to move to 103.9 MHz. The antenna will be on a cell phone tower in New Brunswick.

The Brooklyn 106.3 pirate is still operating.
