The overblown Dixie Chicks feud notwithstanding, Toby always struck me as a good guy who didn't take himself too seriously, and when he did, as on his post-9/11 broadside "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," he could get across a powerful, raw message. I prefer to remember him, though, for fun songs like "I Love This Bar" and this one, "I Wanna Talk About Me," with its gloriously incorrect video that casts Keith as a cop, a surgeon and a pimp! RIP, Toby.

He made a lot of appearances towards the end of last year. Three sold out shows in Las Vegas. A new album. Guest performance on the People's Choice awards. Some thought he might be in remission or that he'd be back at full strength soon. He wrote a song for a Clint Eastwood movie a couple years ago that said it all: Don't Let The Old Man In.

Even with a two-year break from touring to focus on his health, singer, songwriter and entertainer Toby Keith clocked a momentous 2023. And the bells just keep ringing. The latest developments include:

• Pandora surprised Keith backstage Sunday (12/10) with a Triple Billionaire Plaque for performances of his music on the platform. Toby was performing at Dolby Live at Park MGM – a prelude to his 2024 return to touring.

• During three Las Vegas shows this week, Keith performed for two hours each night. A highlight moment was when he sat centerstage for an acoustic set of six songs he said "should've been singles." Surprise guests Trace Adkins and Sammy Hagar joined Keith onstage during the Dec. 10 show. And the audiences’ energy grew every night with chants of “Toby, Toby, Toby…” as Keith performed more than two-dozen hits and "should've been" hits.

A shocker to the country music world.
You will be missed. May he ride high on that horse in Heaven, with his cowboy hat...and I hope he meets up with Miss Kitty. RIP Toby

One of the 90's - 00's country music greats. Was part of that big wave of hot country. Should Have Been a Cowboy was classic. And I think "I Wanna Talk About Me" was one of the first country raps (yeah, I know some of the old school country has a guy talking, but you get the idea. When the song came out the folks at work said "he's bringing some rap to country"). RIP.

The song is called "Red Solo Cup", for the record.
Fixed. Shows how we rename song in our mind. We always have a bunch of them "ready" in the kitchen and they are not "little".

TNA Wrestling (the promotion that was previously known as Impact Wrestling before reverting back to it's old name) released this statement on Toby's passing, as he made a appearance in TNA's first ever event during it's beginnings in 2002 when they did have a weekly TV show that aired on PPV where he hit a vertical suplex on the promotion's co-founder and wrestler Jeff Jarrett:

the moment from Toby's TNA Wrestling appearance:

also Stephen Colbert paid tribute to his friend on the Late Show last night:

as someone who grew up in the 1990s and listened to Country, i have heard some of Toby's greatest hits, and this one is a painful loss for country and he will be missed dearly, cancer sucks and f*** cancer, god speed Toby Keith, you're bring God some big hits on the big concert stage in the sky.

Never liked that one or the one where he sang about the Iraq war but he had many good songs.

I've been listening off and on to SiriusXM's Prime Country channel, which is playing nothing but Toby Keith songs at least through the weekend. (They're not announcing a shut-off time on-air or online, which probably means his label is paying for the tribute and hasn't yet decided when it will end.) I've been hearing a lot of really good songs that were never sent to radio as singles -- thoughtful, romantic, sad, angry and every other emotion, all very well written and performed. I can definitely see sales of Toby's catalog really picking up over the next week or so as people realize what a versatile artist he was. I wasn't a particularly strong fan of his before, but I'm becoming one now.
