Very Strong KEOM

This morning, I’m receiving a very healthy KEOM from Mesquite here in Keller. Not impossible, but with neighboring KTCU (which is a really cool station in its own right) I thought it was a bit odd.

It's called tropospheric ducting.

I had them via ESkip with the HD Carrier flashing (IIRC) back in PA in 2018

Mesquite to Keller wouldn't be tropospheric ducting... much of Keller is already within reception range given the proximity (just 37 miles from KEOM tower to downtown Keller.)
Lower level atmospheric enhancement? Sure. But ducting and e-skipping are much different animals that cause reception well outside normal ranges.

KEOM is a great station, I listen to it whenever I’m in the Dallas area. Today I listened to it as I was driving out of the area. Heard it until I crossed into Wise county on 380. The last time I was in the area a few weeks ago, I remember I had a hard time hearing it as close as Frisco, it was being wiped out by KMQX during tropo. That same day, I also heard 98.7 KPRF from Amarillo interfering with local 98.7 The Spot only 35 miles away.

It has a very wide playlist of classic hits from the 60s-90s. Their tower is beautiful, rising high above Mesquite Memorial Stadium. I couldn’t believe that there’s a high school football stadium with 20000 seats!
This is a fine example of what a non commercial educational station should be.

They've pretty much dropped the 60s music, but the rest of what you say is still on target. When it comes to their music, KEOM is very much a station for pop music junkies, as opposed to the mass market. But that's fine -- the people who want to hear the 200 biggest hits of the 80s can listen to 98.7, and those of us who are willing to sit through an occasional song we don't care for to hear something we haven't heard in years can listen to 88.5.

I live in Michigan and actually did pick up KEOM up here during an E-skip opening in late July. A very welcome visitor. :)

I know a lot of times when I'm getting tropos the stations I'm in the fringe of will come in a lot stronger. Even LPFMs I'm 20-30 miles away from will sometimes come in. Are you saying that's just lower level atmospheric enhancement and not tropos?

There’s some mornings I can pick up KEOM in west Waco if the wind is blowing right or the clouds are in the right position

MISD needs to sell it. The original purpose from 1984 has long since been replaced by the Internet.

I met one of the teachers last year. She said that the school has had many offers to buy the station, yet they refused to sell. The station does not cost the school anything to run besides the cost of the salaries of the teachers. The station is able to make enough money to cover its expenses and pay for the equipment.

Let me guess, was it Peggy Brooks? MISD is an NCE so they cannot sell[ airtime. They wanted nothing tp do with sponsors during my 22 years and they dicked with me after Dr. Griffin retired because they refused to hire another certified instructor to replace him. I could go on, nut you get the idea...

There is plenty of underwriting on KEOM

How nice...such as? As I said earlier. the original purpose of the station is long gone thanks to the Internet. Next time you talk to Peggy, tell her you want to know what she does there besides yell at co-workers.

They need to bring back the 60’s songs when KEOM were playing, nobody plays the 60’s anymore on the radio
There's a reason for that........ the viability of that, even on a non comm that isnt beholden to advertisers is almost nil.

The target age of someone who likes 60s music is about 75-80

Could they bring back maybe a few of the biggest mid to late 60s hits? very sparingly? maybe... but even so, not worth it for a non comm if students want a real life examp[le of radio
