97.3 The Fan fires Coach Kentera

Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton (ex-690/1090) breaks the news that 10-2 host Coach Kentera has been fired by 97.3 The Fan.

Kentera was originally told on the Thursday that he was let go, but would be allowed one more show (according to one story), however, management changed their mind and said no.

Scott Kaplan (The Mightier 1090 SD and 710 ESPN LA) gave his thoughts on the situation on his show (Kaplan and Crew).

The Kaplan show/podcast had some interesting information.

Wow, so Kentera during his 4 years at The Fan, NEVER had a contract, and according to Kaplan when Kentera disclosed how much he was making, said it was around what a Home Depot employee makes. No bonuses, nothing. He's been in Sports broadcasting 30 years, so it's not like he's a newbie and doesn't know any better.

One advantage, he doesn't have to worry about a non-compete clause.

No last show? Reminds me of Mark Larson when he left KCBQ. The Q cancelled his last show. But I submit that is because Larson took *alot* of advertising dollars with him and KCBQ was "irritated".

I've never... and I've never known a manager who did... let a fired/dismissed/laid off air staff member do a goodbye show. Nearly every one I have heard of resulted in some form of nastiness that prevented the employer from giving a good recommendation and kept the dismissed person from getting a decent job.

Kevin from Kevin & Bean did a last show after getting fired, ripped KROQ management and still ended up on KLOS:
