104.9 LPFM granted for San Francisco

This LPFM application was granted today. One watt from San Bruno Mountain. It looks like it will be a fringe signal even in Bernal Heights, much less points farther north. This was the channel that 1450 KEST tried to use for an FM translator, K285HD, in 2019 until it was essentially hounded off the air by classical music fans on the Peninsula who complained of interference with KXSC (//KDFC) from the San Jose area. That was a 100-watt translator at the Candlestick site of the AM station, so it's possible that the greatly reduced power and different location will allow the LPFM to avoid those interference complaints. On the other hand, the K285HD site had a HAAT of 115m and the San Bruno site will be 349m. In any event, beware of classical-music groupies!

If that translator interferes with KXSC/104.9, I'll sign the complaint myself. (KXSC has wonderful fidelity, compared with most of the stations around it on the dial. Don't want to screw up that signal.) But this is one watt, which is a freakin' bedroom nightlight. They could stick the Empire State Building atop Mt. San Bruno and put their antenna on the mast, and that signal still wouldn't make it across I-380 to UAL's parking lot at SFO, regardless of HAAT.

I don't see the point either, but the LPFM groupies aren't always anchored in reality. Just because you can do something doesn't mean it's a good idea.

And for those not familiar with the airport, the United parking lot is in the area of the airport closest to San Bruno Mountain.

That said, I felt there was a certain amount of elitism at play in the complaints about K285HD and the Cantonese-language programming it was rebroadcasting from KEST. The only FM outlet for such programming in the Bay Area now is KVTO's translator at 93.7.
 
FCC seems to be cranking them out today. Not strictly Bay Area, but an LPFM at 107.3 has just been approved for Rio Linda, north of Sacramento.
 
Another grant: KPCR-LP (92.9), to be licensed to Los Gatos. This one actually looks like it has a chance at decent coverage: Los Gatos, Campbell, south San Jose, downtown San Jose, parts of Cupertino.

Thank you. I was multitasking and missed that detail. I had a glass of port tonight in order to forget that.

Today's approval was to cover changes, apparently to move from a tree (!) to a pole. There was an earlier frequency change as well, which seemed to get a bit messy.
