Sports Radio in Austin

It is like Texas weather, just wait 5 minutes for changes. Now Erin Hogan is at ESPN Austin 102.7FM, and has left The Horn. I think the locally owned Horn is not long for the Radio world.

Ironic, we have Jeff and ED back together again on ESPN. I bet E Hogan finds a way to get the owner to pony up some cash and brings Bucky back.

I don't listen to a lot of sports talk during the college football off-season so I barely keep up with these changes. As it stands now, what will be your number one "go to" program for UT football?

I believe 1300 the Zone has the UT contract. But I do not listen to football or games on the radio, rather watch it on TV. I just listen to Sports Radio all day at the office. So changes like this gets my attention.

So 1260AM has flipped from the Horn to Spanish music. No more Jim Rome? How much longer will the Horn be around? It was a cute experiment, but its looking like it will fail soon.

Correct. How much longer will The Horn be a local internet station? Probably until there is either not enough income to keep it going or another station grabs the local rights to the programs they carry. I would guess it will likely be the former.

It's really a shame. The Horn back when they had UT and all the local shows on 104.9 was really a very decent sports station.

On the bright side, it won't have to pay much in performance royalties since it's a talk station. Plus, bandwidth might not cost an arm and a leg either, though it's probably purchased in bulk with the KOKE stream. On the down side, if it's going to have live and local sports talk shows, it's going to have to pay those hosts one way or another. If they're not on commission, the costs are going to add up quickly. Also, if it carries any syndicated programming (which it does), it's likely to lose that at some point.

They don't have FCC requirements. They don't have tower rent and all the brick and mortar costs and taxes. If they can meet payroll, pay for bandwidth and have some decent marketing (yep all 3) then maybe they can do well. The trick is how many were listening online anyway.

They don't have to do 24/7. Just put up the local shows (live) and then available for download. Think podcast.

Will Bucky make a resurgence with E on ESPN Austin? It will then be old 1300AM from back in the day. Bucky and E in the morning and Jeff and Ed in the afternoon.

Its funny how cicular things are in radio. In the early 2000s 1300 Sport Radio was on top in Austin. Then the layoffs came, and new competition came. Looking at the sports radio landscape today, Almost 20 years later, 1300 is back on top. Strange world radio is.

“On top” in which way? ESPN 102.7 has a larger share and a larger cume.
