KEXP Buys KREV in SF

Here's something I didn't expect. The Friends of KEXP, licensee of KEXP, made the winning bid for KREV, an FM station in Alameda, south of San Francisco.

This is a commercial station in a market that hungers for a non-commercial AAA station. They currently have a commercial alternative station, with Audacy's KITS. But they've lacked a AAA since KFOG flipped to an FM simulcast of KNBR.

KEXP is in Seattle. So are they extending the electic format to other markets or planning to make more stations? I think right now they seem to be planning an AAA format for SF.

They had a deal with WNYE to bring the AAA format to New York at one time. But this time they've bought another radio station.

I've talked about the idea of secular formats doing what EMF is doing with religious radio. This may be one example.

Eh, they got Paul Allen money. If any of the bidders are in good shape for a lawsuit, it’s KEXP.

Something tells me the courts are now well-versed in his game and will see through any lawsuits…possibly even with legal/court costs incurred by the plaintiff.

He’ll just file objections to license renewals until he gets shipped off to the care home and they take away his internet.

Wait, what has the station been doing until now? I was under the impression that the simulcast had been on for a month or so already, though the call change wasn't scheduled to go into effect until recently.

I think it’s been stunting for a while, as they were waiting for the sale to officially close before launching the new format. I believe there were also some technical considerations to factor in as well, as the station’s tower site may have been moved back to Mount Sutro. If that is indeed the case, coverage should be pretty decent. Before all of the conversation around KEXP, it aired a hip hop format.

The station was operating as Hip Hop "92.7 The Hustle" under the group running the station for the bankruptcy trustee until today when it began stunting.
