American Public Media Restructure

Financial problems continue in public radio as American Public Media announces a restructuring, leading to layoffs, and the closing of APM Studios as a standalone podcast company:

Interesting; more evidence that podcasting isn't going to be the savior that some thought it would be.

So many podcasts, so little time.

Then there's this quote from the article:

APM Studios will move away from being a standalone podcast studio and will instead “focus on building strong, multiplatform brands that align with our strategic plan,” Joanne Griffith, CCO of APM Studios, told Current in an email.
In English I believe it translates to, "we haven't figured it out yet".
 
Also whenever we talk about Public Radio we tend to focus on the ratings of Morning Edition and All Things Considered from NPR at drive time when radio listening is at it's peak and we cited those shows for one of the main reasons where NPR affiliates get the most of their donations from.

Not shocking to hear APM shutting down their podcast division given that the majority of their donors and listeners are either listening to KPCC-FM Los Angeles or Minnesota Public Radio the local stations APM owns directly or APM's Marketplace via NPR affiliates around the country

I think radio in general is facing this issue. I.e., podcast saturation eventually is going to take place.

Another key takeaway from the article: “Broad economic trends affecting the podcast market, including material dips in pricing for podcast advertising, are also a factor.”

Podcast advertising isn't bringing in as much as they'd hoped.
