KFUE 106.7 Buckeye

KDVA has a new set of calls: KFUE .. That would be literrally "Que fue" which does not really have a 1:1 translation. .. sort of "That which was" or "that was".. If you add an accent "Qué fue" then it would be "What was that?" (Yes... Spanish accent rules changed in 1959 .. but let's not go there.)

Okay. What does this means for Phoenix radio? The "Regional Mexican" format of "La Indiscreta 106.7" will probably change to some nostalgic/roamtuc format. Stay tuned.

This seems to indicate a format change to their "Fuego" Latin CHR format.

La Indiscreta is/was an unrelated translator rebroadcasting 1540 KASA. KDVA just completed its move from 106.9 to 106.7 to prepare current simulcast partner "La Suavecita 107.1" KVVA to complete its move to South Mountain.

Correct.

Yes.. ¡Que fuego! (What Fire! How Hot!) makes total sense. I guess I read jnto things too deep .. Now if KFUEGO was allowed as a callsign then everyone wou)d be "feliz".

Easy translation: "What's up?"

The issue is that this station misses 90% of the market with its 60dbu signal and almost all of it with the 65 dbu signal.

So we have had a few things happen here.
  1. Entravision got KVVA to move to South Mountain (changing COL to Sun Lakes). That made the KDVA simulcast unnecessary. It also forced KDVA to 106.7 from 106.9.
  2. That put them on the same frequency as translator K294CW, tied to KASA — La Indiscreta. That station should have moved immediately. It hasn't, and Entravision slapped them in December with well-founded interference complaints.
    1. For obvious reasons, K294CW couldn't move to 106.9 like KPPV/Prescott Valley.
  3. K294CW is in danger not only from that but also from the questionable operating status of KASA, which is a known issue to the FCC. This station has essentially been an FM translator-only operation for several years. That's a no-no.
  4. Now, Entravision is breaking KDVA off as KFUE, its own program stream (Fuego incoming). The fact that Tolleson is on the eastern edge of its coverage area indeed indicates this facility's massive shortfall.

Its simply a matter of having a facility and using it to clear some of their network programming. Entravision handles syndication for Edgar 'Shoboy' Sotelo's syndicated morning show which runs on their other "Fuego" stations including Las Vegas and Sacramento and now they add a Top 15 market clearance. It's not there to be a ratings killer, although it may hurt Power 98.3 a bit as the format is Bilingual Rhythmic CHR with a mix of Spanish artists like Bad Bunny, Ozuna, Daddy Yankee, and Karol G and English speaking artists such as Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Jack Harlow.

So what the H-E-double hockey sticks is going on down at 15th Ave. and Baseline? Last time I was down that way, about 2 years ago, they had two towers (re)built as of July 2022 (I personally saw them when driving down Baseline at the time). Now the latest Google Street View from October of that year shows no towers. Why would somebody put up towers and then take them down?

Unless South Mountain 107.1 signs on with HD, and Fuego is on an HD2 (not that it would have much impact, but would theoretically give the format better coverage).

It sounds like it will be the West Valley counterpart to KQMR "100.3 Latino Mix."

Stations with "FU" in their call letters belong to the subset of stations with brands like "KKNT" or "KLIT." It's hard to believe nobody raises their hand in corporate meetings during which call letter changes like these are contemplated.

Given "FUEGO" is an actual Spanish word that even gringos know, I don't think it ever crossed anybody's mind.

i still am lost at words for this station...why is there another format on 106.7 this morning i was hearing Don Cheto but i know that Shoboy is on Fuego...is the FCC aware of KASA still using 106.7, having 2 station fight each other on the same frequency doesn't help a new station get established! Entravision should have waited for the FCC to get KASA completely off the air and then launch its new station! SMH what a mess!

KASA's translator became an illegal operation the second that KFUE filed its license to cover to operate on 106.7.

Entravison now needs to file interference complaints from people within their protected contour, which basically follows Loop 101 across the east valley, which will trigger the FCC to force them to shut down until it can move the translator to a new frequency (which will likely be next to impossible).

They did that on December 20, 2023. 28 interference complaints mostly in west-central and south Phoenix. The potential interference zone doesn't really follow the 101. In fact, it doesn't even reach the 101.

The FCC is very aware of KASA's problems. There are two informal objections pending, and the FCC has issued a letter of inquiry on KASA's silence record.

I noticed today that KVVA 107.1 appears to be broadcasting from South Mountain, as the signal seems to be clearer than it had been previously, and RDS is showing up.
