Station Sales Week 4/19/24

Per Radio Insight

"Jackson County Broadcasting’s Total Media Group acquires Phillip Leslie’s Hometown Broadcasting of Portsmouth for $1.25 million. The deal includes “Sportsmouth” 1260 WNXT/95.7 W239CQ, Hot AC “Mix 99.3” WNXT-FM, and Classic Rock “107.5 The Breeze” WZZZ Portsmouth OH. Total Media Group owes thirteen stations in southeastern Ohio."

With this move - Total Media appears to be on a path to "own" South Central/Southeastern Ohio. (they own stations now in Jackson, Waverly, Athens, Point Pleasant).

I agreed the "Hank" move for 100.9 was a good decision. It will be interesting to see what they do with 107.5 in Portsmouth. I could see them taking on the "Pure Rock" branding that they have on 98.7 and 105.5.
 
Total Media has picked up another signal along the Ohio River with the purchase of WIRO 107.1 looking at FCC Data. This Station had recently been owned by EMF and was a signal for Air1 but was sold to the folks behind 1230 WITO Ironton (running a religious format). Appears they are already unloading it to Total Media. Not sure what format Total Media will place here. They have nearby signals in Portsmouth and up the river in Point Pleasant, WV.
 
They could also have good credit, good payment history and a good relationship with their primary bank

I was talking to a friend in the Northeast and we were talking about a broadcaster we bought knew and wondered how they were doing what they were doing (i wish i could remember what broadcaster this was) and we surmised they have have the above.

When I was working remotely for the WY station before going full time, we had a few problems with checks arriving so my boss went to his bank to set up direct deposit.. they wanted to charge him a small amount for it, he said no.. and they didnt put up a fight and they did it for free.

He could also get a loan from his bank to buy another station if he wanted, despite that not being possible for many these days. why? He has nearly 15 years of good history with his bank

WIRO launched "Hank FM" this week along with Sister station 92.1 in Middleport, OH.
 
Total media has applied with the FCC to take 1260 WNXT Portsmouth to a different tower site basically as a 250-watt daytime AM signal - Guess enough to keep a program source going to its FM Translator on 95.7 (Since nothing says you can't run a translator 24/7 for a daytimer - they do this with AM 660 WXIC's translator at 95.9 in Waverly).

Will the FCC downgrade a full time to daytime?
 
Total Media expands further in Portsmouth Ohio with the purchase of 1010 WIOI/92.1 FM. It will be interesting to see what they do with this one as "Adult Standards" is not exactly in their wheel house of formats.

There is change at WIOI...Total Media dropped the syndicated Music of your Life, and is now airing Scott Shannon's True Oldies. The change takes WIOI back to it's heyday as a Top 40 during the 60's and 70's. Coming full circle....

Good to hear! I had not had a chance to see what would land there after they ran Total Media's Christmas "Ho Ho Radio" format for the season.

The sale is still pending with the FCC. It was delayed a bit with the government shutdown. I saw in the documents that Total Media agreed to the FCC to stop identifying WQIO-HD2/100.9 as WMVO.

I would bet BAS wants the sale to go through. In summer 2024, they purchased a new studio building for WCPZ/WLEC/WMJK in Sandusky and have yet to move in.

Can't wait to hear Hank on 93.7!!! Their playlist is much broader than The Maverick's.

Looking at FCCdata.org the transfer of the license to Total Media was approved 9/30/25. Total Media has not always made major changes to stations they brought right away - I know when they took over the Waverly stations it was quite awhile (almost a year or so) before they made major changes/flips.
