Buffalo On the March

The March monthly is up. Remember, these are the 12+ shares on a rolling 3-month average. Reach and demographic breakdowns generally tell advertisers and programmers a very different story.

WBLK and WYRK look like big winners for Townsquare. 97-Rock dips, WHTT makes up the difference for Cumulus. The "New" WTSS's loss is WKSE's gain. WGR-AM misses the Bills and Sabres in the NHL playoffs. Maybe they'll get a bump from the NFL draft.

Admin edit: RadioDiscussions does not have a license with Nielsen to publish the ratings charts that you did.

Jan-Feb-Mar 2024, considered the Winter book, turned cold for 96.1 in March, losing two whole shares Persons 12+ since the months of November and December have been jettisoned. Townsquare's WBLK and WYRK lead the pack respectively, with WYRK impressively picking up an entire share (1.1), but WBUF remains consistent at 1.2 --- even the signal-challenged Wolf, which ticked up half a share, has a higher share. It's mildly curious that WECK remained flat. I thought it would tick up after the Christmas delirium waned. WBEN, Kiss and WHTT perked up nicely, yet how it is that 97 lost a whole share?

[No 'bolt ... it's not because 97 plays the same 384 songs they played 24 years ago. That's long been discounted. Could it be the sample?]

The same way 96.1 lost 2 shares--fewer people wrote them down in the Nielsen Diary. Even the most die hard 97 Rock listeners get bored with the playlist. They move on and then cycle back to get their Free Bird fix.

WBUF didn't benefit. The Rock format there is neither fish nor fowl. That genre of music is as dead as their ratings. Are they even aware that Pearl Jam just released an excellent new album? Their recent playlist shows nothing but the same 80's hair bands and typical 90's stuff. WBUF is going nowhere with their current approach. Maybe this is part of the Cluster strategy -- put on a format that is dreadfully bad so it doesn't impact WYRK or WBLK in any way...

You actually made me laugh with this line, 'bolt. It reminded me of the story arc of The Producers, the Mel Brooks movie and subsequent play, except WBUF's modern classic rock format didn't come close to becoming a raving (satirical success.) That noted, it's highly unlikely that any company or cluster thinks in (negative) terms of "Let's adopt a format that's so bad it'll be good, and it won't impact other stations in our cluster or stations that we compete with." A radio pal, over a few rounds of Molson, remarked, "They (Townsquare) should just go Oldies if for no other reason than to wake up WECK and make Buddy crazy." Funny, but not how formats are devised ... although with regard to WBUF's current fare, one wonders.

As to Pearl Jam's new album: Would that be in the realm of the Stone's latest release, and the latest from Billy Joel ... as in, "yeah, so..."

"Yeah So" is exactly why fewer people care about Radio. Is anyone excited by WBUF? They know there's nothing worthwhile to discover there. You made me with laugh with the line "It's not how formats are devised". The programming masterminds have achieved a 1.2 share on an excellent FM signal. I guess they'll be inducted into that World Renowned Buffalo Radio Hall of Fame any day now.

What audience is WBUF targeting? Men 18-40 are probably listening to Hip Hop, Country or even Taylor Swift these days. We can agree that whatever WBUF is attempting right now has almost no appeal to any mass audience...

Some other notes:

*Whatever tweaks WBFO made to their schedule don't seem to helping them; they lost half a point from the last trend.
*WWWS is only a tenth of a share behind WBUF. That should tell you how worthless 'BUF is as currently constituted.

Jan-Feb-Mar 2024, considered the Winter book,
Since Nielsen began weighting each 12-week rolling average, there are no Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall books. There are just 12 monthly books, all equally valid. The monthlies are not trends, they are books.
