there's hardly anything profitable from the ALT or K•ROCK brands in New York, unlike the Eagle branding over in DFW

Right. And with rock’s long track record of unmitigated failure in NYC, it is hard to imagine anyone spending tens of millions on a radio signal just to see it fail yet again.
Not only is that just plain ridiculous, but there's a PBS station in New Orleans with the WYES call sign that may have an issue with that.

This is getting into a certain Philadelphian’s territory.
I wish 98.7 could remain sports since New York doesn’t have a sports station on FM currently. Apparently WFAN used to talk sports at one point?
It is not 100% certain that KEGL will return to its former format. The chatter could be a misdirect, but we’ll know in the next day or so.
KEGL has flopped and been reborn so many times that they should change the name from “The Eagle” to “The Phoenix.” Any new incarnation could fall on its face again. Also DFW has undergone tremendous demographic changes, as has NYC.
I’m sure WYES will allow the use of the call on an out of market FM in exchange for an extremely generous financial consideration.🤑🤑🤑
Most big-market sports stations sound a lot like WFAN -- more in jokes and guy talk than meat-and-potatoes sports talk.

That comes under the “I’ve been told that somebody else has been told by somebody else” category. Perhaps true, but no confirmation from iHeart itself. And the new incarnation might be quite different from the past.
