Audacy cutbacks in Philly

Surprisingly haven’t heard/read anything. Hard to believe Philly was spared.
Considering the website for NY's New 102.7 hasn't been updated to reflect the release of night host Christine Richie, and as Lance pointed out, folks haven't gone public, I'm sure there's some names we don't know/haven't realized yet.

Audacy let the airstaff for WSPA-FM Magic 106.3 in SC go almost 2 months ago and sold the station. As of now, they still haven’t been removed from the website, nor has it been updated.

I don’t think KYW newsradio’s staff page on their website has been updated in the past 6-12 months to reflect any new hires (which as a listener I know they’ve had.)

This is from Phila Business Journal:

“Five employees from KYW Newsradio were among dozens laid off by parent company Audacy last week.

Sources said those impacted include KYW News Director Kevin McCorry and longtime reporter Hadas Kuznits (other individuals were not named)……

Yadgaroff said no other employees from the company's six local stations were impacted.“

If you're going to quote a news story, you must provide a link...

Audacy is a sloppy company. No eye for detail. I Hearts’s Websites are updated-Websites easier to navigate-tighter formats etc …….

One thing that always amazes me (I promise I'm not a certain former poster to this board), is how WPHT remains untouched. Live, local hosts 6A-7P weekdays (plus producers etc.) I'm definitely not a fan of the programming (again, I promise, I'm not a certain former poster), but I'm impressed by Audacy for not just syndicating it out. The station must bill enough to do it.

The on-air staff at WPHT are smartly members of SAG/AFTRA and likely have a deal requiring a certain number of local hours per day. Only the three spoken word stations in Audacy's cluster are unionized.

Apparently they bill well during the day. Perhaps there's some cross-pollination with KYW. Audacy doesn't own a syndication company. Cumulus & iHeart do. So if Audacy were to run syndication, it would come from one of their competitors. As it is, they currently run Mark Levin from Cumulus and Coast To Coast from iHeart. Dana Loesch is an Audacy show that was intended to replace Rush Limbaugh in mid-day. They run all the outside shows at night.

Pretty much all of Audacy’s talk stations, even in smaller markets, are local during the day, or at least PM drive outside of morning drive which is always local/live. I don’t believe a lot of these stations are unionized. Given their financial issues, I’m somewhat surprised they haven’t tried sharing some of their shows across stations to cut back on expenses. St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Greenville, Hartford, Minneapolis, Buffalo, and New Orleans come to mind. Almost entirely local except for a slot or so from 5-6a-7p.

I think this really gets back to Entercom's original view of themselves as primarily a local radio owner, with local radio content, and local radio sales. They didn't carry much syndication before buying CBS Radio, and they don't carry a lot now. Things may change if David Field leaves the company. But his view of things is all local.

The irony of those hosts benefiting from being in a union is rich.

I guess you mean the irony is that they're conservative talk hosts and are mostly anti-union. Even though SAG-AFTRA helps keep them employed and their salaries high.

Of course, these union agreements mandating a certain number of local hours on weekdays are in effect until they are not. In 2022, SAG-AFTRA realized WINS and WCBS could not continue if their staffing were completely separate. The union agreed to allow Audacy to combine their staffs. It was a wise move. Both stations continue, even if some weekend anchors, street reporters and traffic reporters might get heard on both stations.

So this was unexpected. Audacy's WPHT replaces its syndicated Dana Loesch show with a local host! You know him, you love him, the hard-working Walt Sterling will be hosting 5 nights a week, 9 to midnight:

I find this move highly unusual
