A Specialty Show in Morning Drive on WBGO

I am not in the radio business, so I would like to hear comments from more knowledgeable posters. WBGO, a not-for-profit jazz station, now has a show called Judy Carmichael's Jazz Inspired that is aired Monday - Friday 6 AM - 8 AM. Gary Walker is now heard from 8 AM - 12 noon. It seems strange that a specialty show is on the air during the morning drive. I would think it should be aired in the evening or on weekends.

Comments.

The posters of Radiodiscussions are not interested in this issue. This show is devoted to interviews, but listeners to WBGO want to hear Jazz interspersed with a newscast.

From a programming mind, I would send specialty shows to evenings or weekends and likely Saturday morning before noon or on Sunday morning. I would think by evening listeners want jazz and not interviews. Typically stations don't opt for something that might have them losing listeners/donors during strategic hours but it could be as simple as a major donor wanting the show placed at that time. It would be interesting to hear any sponsorship messages (there may be ones for the show the local).

My guess is they've determined there's a very limited audience to their station between 6 & 8 AM.

I notice that KKJZ in LA also starts its hosted morning show at 8AM. However, they just run unhosted jazz from 6 to 8.

Ten hours of 'prime-time' radio programming?

If the programming is compelling, then maybe there's a reason for it being in that spot.

If not, then someone has some deep pockets who wants the programming at that time. Compelling or not.

WBGO does continue the newscasts during these hours. It seems like they are stretching a 1 hour program into two hours with additional music and news.

I think it's a strange choice, but it's less obviously dumb than BruceNYC initially suggested.
