Charlotte Ratings April 2024

The KQC free fall continues. HQC back in the 1's. LKO took a big cume hit, but still #1.

K104.7 previously got rid of all the Yacht Rock songs in their playlist. I'm guessing that has something to do with their big drop.

Charlotte incidentally not a big hotbed for Christian music but I wouldn't be surprised if His Radio surpasses Hits 96.1.

I wouldn't say Charlotte is not big on religious music. You'd have to go back a few years, but Praise has had shares in the 5's before. I'm not sure if they use single line reporting for the Charlotte translators, but WLFJ is a Greenville-Spartanburg station. I don't see them passing WHQC.

I don't think getting rid of "yacht rock" is what caused WKQC's drop. I think the biggest issue is they're all over the place musically, trying to be everything to everybody. You want to have some variety, to attract a bigger audience and keep the station sounding fresh, but you also want to have a core sound and a core audience (a foundation or identity) that you can fall back on, and I don't know who they're targeting these days. They've been so inconsistent.

WLFJ also has translators in Charlotte which are likely getting counted.

Don’t forget 94.1/91.9. EMF only occasionally subscribes for established markets. So there are listeners there that aren’t showing.

Praise’s performance is still impressive to me on that class A signal. But it hits where a lot of the likely audience is, so the signal may be a bit of a non factor.

Agree with everything CLTRadio said about WKQC. 1000%.

I'm surprised Beasley has let KQC's free fall last this long. They were #1 AQH and #2 cume not even 2 years ago. Now they're out of the top 10 AQH and behind WLKO, WSOC, WKKT and WLNK in cume, and the gap is widening. I don't know what they're thinking.

Contemporary Christian WRCM was very popular until it was taken over by K-Love. I guess the K-Love people don't subscribe to the ratings. Before K-Love It was promoted locally with local relatable people on the air.

WKQC doesn't sound that different to me, except for the inclusion of some newer music that I don't care for. I know I'm not in the demo.

When I worked there in the CBS days all the music logs were done by consultant Gary Berkowitz. Is he still consulting?

The Lake just played Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi followed by Elton John's Tiny Dancer. That's all over the place.

Looking over The Lake's music list they seem to have a harder edge than WKQC. Maybe that's what people want?

Jack Daniel is the day to day programmer of WKQC. I don’t believe they’ve used consultants since Beasley took over. Jack also programs the sports H2 station and WSOC (WSOC along with Cameron, WNKS programmer). John Reynolds moved to more of a corporate role.

WLKO has always been edgy and rock heavy. They’re not programmed locally. They use one of iHeart’s national logs. Ironically, Jack was WLKO’s first PD, and WEND’s as well.

I think there is room for a classic hits or AC or whatever station WKQC wants to be. They’ve just got to pick a lane and stay in it.

My mom used to be a big fan of “New Life 91.9” WRCM. She even had the license plate.

K-LOVE could be doing very well for all we know, just like 95.7 they don’t subscribe so we don’t have any idea of who’s listening. I know WRCM’s former sister station WMHK in Columbia still has a very big following as K-LOVE.

iHeart is not going to put talk on 96.1. I’m quite certain they’d rather have the current CHR ratings and the demo that comes with it instead of an almost exclusively 55+ (probably 65+ now) format.

25-54: 1. WPEG 2. WOSF 3. WFNZ 4. WSOC 5. WKKT 6. WEND
18-34: 1. WKKT 2. WFNZ 3. WPEG 4. WSOC 5T. WBAV, WEND & WNKS
18-49: 1. WKKT 2T. WPEG & WOSF 4T. WBAV, WEND, WSOC & WNKS 8. WFNZ
Wow, a lot of WLKO's audience must be coming from 55+. Solid performance for WFNZ, I bet their billing is great.

Side note: IMO, John Boy and Billy have run their course at WRFX. Show sounds the same as it did over 20 years ago and is just stale. It has to skew older. Isley has hinted at retirement, once that comes hopefully Fox looks for a fresher, more relevant morning show.

Charlotte is very fortunate to have a lot of well established morning shows that have been very successful in the market. Bob & Sheri, John Boy & Billy, Paul Schadt, Tanner, No Limit Larry, Steve Harvey, Ace & TJ. The newer shows like Miguel & Holly, Matt Harris & Friends and Erica Campbell that are going after a younger demo have been the ones that have struggled to catch on. Be careful what you wish for. The one exception being Woody & Wilcox, which dramatically increased WEND’s morning #s.

Beasley’s HD2 sports station actually outbilled WFNZ last quarter. They’re more established in the sports betting space.

I’ve been listening to WKKT the most the last couple of months. WSOC still has that older audience boosting their #s. Glad to see that reflected in the ratings. The urbans have been sounding off musically recently.

The first thing to do is stop calling it AC when there's nothing recent.

Has something changed on WSOC? Why would older listeners want what passes for country these days?

WAME is the only country music I listen to in the area. And at night that's not going to be heard in Charlotte.

I prefer the newer country. Most people agree with me, considering gold based country stations are few and far between, and most don’t perform well, especially in PPM markets.

WKKT has been “new country” going back to the late 90s or early 2000s. WSOC was more of a full service country station until they flipped when ratings went to crap once PPM was introduced. WSOC’s audience is still about 10 years older than WKKT’s.

I thought WSOC went "new country" as well.

They did. As I said, “WSOC was more of a full service country station until they flipped when ratings went to crap once PPM was introduced.” They flipped to new country in 2011, but still held onto some of that older audience.
