WSRQ Music

Owned by LECOM, this station is all over the map when it comes to classic hits music. I really wish they would organize the songs better instead of "trainwrecking" them with song mismatches throughout the day. While they play a decent selection of music spread out from different decades (mainly 60's, 70's and 80's) and a rare 50's or early 90's song, they play them in rotation that sometimes has your head spinning. Why would you play a harder rock sounding song from the mid 80's, just after a mellow 60's song or a 70's disco or funk tune?? This happens all the time. While I enjoy a lot of the music played on this station, it needs to be presented better and the station needs to have fun with its library during the weekends or holidays. You should showcase your vast music library into themes or countdowns of sort to make it fun. An all 70's weekend, a number ones weekend, an 80's weekend, a super 60's weekend, summer songs, the best of 1976, the tops hits of 1983....etc...etc...There are endless possibilities here. Hundreds of hits are heard monthly, but there are other classic hits that I never hear or have heard only once in the last six months or a year. They also need to eliminate the countless unknown album tracks, b-sides and repetitive virtual concerts that they play throught the week intermingled with more popular classic hits. This station with it's huge music library has so much potential but seems to be doing just the basics in an area with many retirees.

You‘re leaving out one important detail. They are non-commercial. So they don’t need to play by the same rules as commercial stations do.

I agree, to a point.

We';re a non comm, but while we do have quite a bit of musical variety, i dont let it get all over the road all of the time.... but i also dont repeat the same couple hundred songs over and over.

I take what ive learned in commercial radio and apply it here

That's the beauty of non-commercial radio, & why I prefer to stay a DJ on these stations over commercial radio.
It's the element of surprise that keeps my listeners tuned in, as well as the presentation & selections on my radio show that I've been doing since 2005.
I challenge commercial radio to be as bold as what you are describing on WSRQ.
I applaud them for being different.
I also hope they are doing well in ratings, if they are even ranked.
We need more stations like these to push the boundaries & open commercial radio consultants' minds about what really works on-air.
Just my opinion.

Its about what listeners want and what your competitors are or arent doing more then consultants.

I do afternoons for a locally owned standalone in WY that has a very very wide "AC Variety" format but it spans many genres and sounds.. and it works because of what our competitors are or arent doing along with whats between the music. what we do in laramie wouldnt work in alot of other places, especially big markets that need a mroe focused playlist.

listeners dont wanna hear stiffs, radio/music nerds do

I like most of the songs on that station, but they need to present them better. And as a non-commercial they certainly have more liberties on what they can play. I'm all for it, believe me. Just play them in sequence that makes sense to a listener. I mean, would you play "Rock the Casbah" right after "I Honestly Love You"? I certainly wouldn't.

If they can sustain that level of variety, more power to them. Sounds more like an issue with how they schedule and rotate the music. Some proper software and someone who knew how to code the songs would fix it.

Such a great selection of music, hits and non-hits, they need to showcase them better over the weekends by theming them as such. A weekend dedicated to just 70's, 60's or 80's. All number one or #2 songs. A to Z's, listener voted countdowns, top 500, beach music...etc.... Just a missed opportunity by ignoring the fun they can have with this, with their listeners.
