WBWD-AM 540 off air

Has been off the air for a few days now. Hope they return soon! It's great to hear a low-band AMer and how far their signal travels on only 10kW. Can hear them from Springfield, Mass to Philadelphia.

Back when they were 250 Watts, I could hear them on a car radio in Hartford

It would have a much farther reach along the coast going South if WGOP didn't share the frequency

If we’re talking about the old days… I remember checking out this station as a kid in Fairfield County. Then they were WLIX. I’m almost certain they had a Top-40 format at one point, though (not always accurate) Wikipedia mentions only Beautiful Music and Christian formats in the 1970s. Does anyone else recall Top-40 on the station back then or is my memory incorrect?

Same growing up in Bristol. CT. Them and 740 would blast in on the car stereo. Back when I first discovered 740 they were Country and then Radio Disney. (Yes I know 740 has more than 250 watts). And one time when 740 was down I picked up 250 watt WJIB Cambridge, Mass in Bristol CT.

This should be on the Nassau-Suffolk board. WLIX had a MOR / Top 40 music format before they flipped to contemporary Christian in the late 70's. I remember my mother listening and calling into a show called Auction Ears which ran twice a day during the week. I believe the station was a daytimer until the early 90's.

According to the FAA’s NOTAM system, effective 5/23/24, both of WBWD’s towers have non-functioning tower lights. Now owned by American Tower, one is about 325 feet high, the other Is 500 feet. They within 6 nautical miles of MacArthur Airport.
Combined with the fact that the station is dark, it’s as if the electric service has been turned off.
Guess we’ll see in the next few days if they come back on the air, or notify the Commission that they’ve been silent and may remain so temporarily.

I grew up on Long Island. My radio listening years probably started in 1976. I don't remember 54 ever playing hits. The stations playing hits which came in well were 60 WICC, 66 WNBC and 77 WCBS. The rest of the dial was useless to a boy only interested in pop.

If they were ever a Top-40, it was a bit earlier on.

You are correct, they flipped sometime between Memorial day and the fourth of July in 1976. The format lasted about a year, until Malcolm Smith Jr. sold the station to the church pastor who flipped it to Christian.

It is indeed a translator. But 96.7 is located in New Jersey, not Long Island. It is therefore retransmitting 1310 AM, in Parsippany NJ.
It would be interesting to know whether 1310 AM has remained on the air, unlike 540 AM.

My bet is they walked away. That's a thing lately.
The station has quite a good signal, at the very lower end of the band. It should have some decent value if the owner decides to sell it. According to Wikipedia, he paid 1.3 million dollars for it in 2020.
