The Warmath Family, owner of WIRJ AM in Humboldt, recently sold their cable television and internet company to Spectrum. Once Humboldt Cable, then Click 1, and finally 1 Tennessee, it appears that Spectrum will no longer have a local office in Humboldt, and that the building is now closed to the public, only used for techs to roll from. I say this because the building that the company operated from once housed WIRJ. Although WIRJ is still licensed, it has not been on in years. Unlike the other AM station in Humboldt, and all of the AM stations in nearby Jackson, WIRJ never applied for an FM translator.

I've never understood how they could be allowed to keep a license considering they've apparently made no effort to get the station back on for years.
No, and they generally wont act on a publics report of a station being silent, even with good evidence.
I tried it once, yearrrrrrrrsssssssssss ago, when i was even mroe of a punk than i am now, with proof, and they did nothing.

It's even worse there since they're apparently not on at all. Not even messages that new programming is coming.🙄
How long has it gone on like this? I seem to recall that WCTA hung on for about 15 years in limbo before they finally went off. Let's see if WIRJ can top that. I remember that I occasionally used to listen to Powerline over WIRJ, but that has, of course, been years ago!
WIRJ hasn't been on in several years. I once posted in the old WIRJ thread, wondering if their tower lights were even lit at night these days, as the tower is well over 250 feet tall.
WIRJ has been the recipient of an FCC fine (maybe several) in the past. I'd think that would be enough to keep something on the air. With that said, if the station was on the air, would it have any listeners in this day and age?

If we have a situation with absentee (or maybe just absent-minded) ownership not paying those fines, then they aren't losing anything. Of course, they also aren't MAKING any money by NOT being on the air, so there's no real loss. And the FCC apparently doesn't care enough to come in and shut them down.
This seems to be happening too many times in Tennessee (and probably other states, too). Too many small(ish) town AM stations no longer able to make a go of it.
Well, WIRJ submitted cancellation to the FCC two days ago.
I wonder if the 250 foot tall tower on South 17th Street in Humboldt will remain, and if it's even lit these days ... although it sort of looks like it's been painted recently by looking on Google Maps. I haven't been by it in person in months.
