Billboards for WCCR

A radio station email came from WCCR-AM 1260 called: "JUNE: Month of The Sacred Heart" was sent out. One of the items was this:

Billboards are Coming!

Look for our billboards this summer on various highway interchanges throughout greater Cleveland.

So will this mark the first time in over 20 years that the station has put up a billboard? I remember seeing billboards in and around downtown Cleveland for Radio Disney when it was still fairly new in the market. Last one I saw was in 2001 around this time. There was probably one a few years later (2004?) as well, but I can't recall. Not many stations advertise on billboards nowadays, and their main purpose was probably to grab the attention of out-of-town travelers who were unaware of the station's existence or format.

Billboards are the closest to "point of purchase" for radio of any other medium. They remind listeners at a moment when 50% or more of all radio listening takes place that a station is there and doing something they might like.

I liked the boards that showed "playing now". If you like the song or the artist, that is a strong hook.

With today's electronic "big screen" boards, stations can promote each show in its daypart as well as upcoming contests and station events. But revenue is off so much that few stations can afford a big outdoor campaign any more.
