AM Frequency of the Week: 1560

Carmichael, CA

Dayttime: Nothing
Nighttime: KNZR Bakersfield, CA

Valljeo, CA

Dayttime: Nothing
Nighttime: KNZR Bakersfield, CA

When the customary 50,000 watt version of WFME NYC was doing its thing from towers on Newtown Creek in Queens, they were a daytime regular out here, 125 miles due west. Back when they were WQEW and played the Standards, the wife and I one night (on separate radios) IDed an Oldies station in the background -- WMRO from Tennessee.
Nine years ago -- wow; that long already? -- WFME was publicly off their 50K signal for about ten days. I forget the reason ..... xmtr work, worship, spite ..... and a few SSS's brought in 5 newies, two of them from Ohio. I figure that was my SSS limit. But 1560 is the most bountiful frequency here in NE PA with nine loggings.
No idea what WFME is up to nowadays. In the isolated times I was in the mood for it, I kind of liked their choice of religious music ; today's 'Contemporary' religious racket all sounds as though it's done by groups like Boston who got 'saved' and moved to suburban Nashville.
WFME's signal hasn't stayed in one place since Harold Camping's Rapture that probably took half the audience and supporters to a newer form of life.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: nothing
Nighttime: used to be WFME, but these days it's most likely KGOW with their Vietnamese language programming

DX/RETRO: another frequently station received on this frequency is KTUI ( Sullivan, MO), with fair signal usually heard right before sign-off. Other stations heard in the past include KQYX (Joplin, MO), KLNG (Council Bluff, IA), WCNW (Fairfield, OH), WTOD (Toledo, OH), WSHY (Shelbyville, IL), WAGL (Lancaster, SC), WRIN (Rensselaer, IN), WKDO (Liberty, KY), WNWN (Portage, MI), KLTI (Macon, GA). Most recent new stations logged are WSEZ (Paoli, IN) and WHAT (Cowpens, SC) in 2022.

I was amazed to stumble into a group of leftover Camping followers buying ads on "X". The new date is May 21, 2033. Set your notifications.

East Tennessee: Days-a whiff of WKDO, Liberty City, KY. Sunset/daytime skip: WHAT, Cowpens SC.
Winter daytime skip used to bring WCNW a couple of times a year, sometimes with an ad for vacations in the Smoky Mountains.
Night: When WFME was full power, it was them more than anything. I have received WFME on the longwire. Otherwise KGOW, which is seemingly heard everywhere. I'm trying to remember a sports station that was widely heard with WFME completely off.
Retro/other: West Central Ohio: WCNW days, WQXR/WQEW nights.

Tyler, TX:

Once upon a time, there was a daytimer at Daingerfield (KNGR; nee KEGG) that I could weakly pick up. That facility has since been surrendered. Nowadays, 1560 is reserved, and has been so since 2007, for the Vietnamese programming of KGOW Bellaire (Houston). I will say, it's not the flamethrower it once was during the day, but still a pretty listenable signal being thrown my way throughout the daylight hours.

At night, nothing much to speak of, other than KGOW continuing to pump out its 19kW to the SE, although a little more weakly here because I am way way NE of the TX site, and "The Franchise" KEBC Del City (OKC), OK with sports popping up on it periodically. I've never personally heard KTXZ here in the city of roses.

Denver, CO -
Daytime, not a thing.
Nighttime, it's probably Houston's KGOW. I've never gotten a legal ID from it, but the Vietnamese-language programming is distinctive enough for me to be reasonably confident that it's what I'm getting. It's at moderate signal strength at best and fades pretty often.

Retro -
In central Missouri, the most frequent nighttime visitor was KKAA Aberdeen, SD, which turned in its license in 2020 after being silent for nearly a year. Daytime, the closest station was, and still is, KLTI Macon, MO, originally a 250-watt daytimer that at some point manged to go up to 1 kw. What keeps that station afloat financially is a mystery to me, and always has been. It has three FM translators, so the AM station is likely to continue for the sole purpose of providing programming to those translators.

Seattle area: Days, used to be KZIZ Sumner WA, with Punjabi programming (urban/smooth jazz before that), but they've gone off the air.

Nights: KVAN Burbank WA (Tri Cities area) with Spanish religion (Familia, I think), and KNZR Bakersfield.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days: Until recently, I got WFME "Family Radio" New York, NY. Near sunset, I have received WSBV South Boston, VA, WFSP Kingwood, WV, WYZD Dobson, NC and WWYC Toledo, OH after WFME signed off.

Nights: Ever since WFME signed off, I get either WGLB Elm Grove, WI or KGOW Bellaire, TX. I have also received WKDO Liberty, KY, WTNS Coshocton, OH and WFSP Kingwood, WV whenever they forgot to sign off.

Central Kentucky:
Days: WKDO Liberty with a classic hits format.
They also have a translator on 103.7 W279 DT
They are about 40 miles south of me.

Nights: I've not really tried for anything on this frequency

WKDO in NJ! Impressive!

Day: On my most sensitive radios away from RFI, I can hear a faint flutter from KGOW in Bellaire, TX. It often has a decent signal when there's winter daytime skywave.

Sunset: It's KGOW, with KEBC in Del City, OK, eventually mixing in with sports talk/games and later KZQQ in Abilene coming up with news talk. KHBR in Hillsboro sometimes comes up with classic country before it signs off for the day.

Night: KGOW is most dominant but subject to cancellation as well as splatter from 1570 XERF. I can usually null it somewhat by aiming NW, in which KZQQ and XEJPV in Ciudad Juárez (Spanish-language Catholic) occasionally pop up. The latter signs off around midnight.

Sunrise: KGOW is more in/out with KEBC popping up now and then at day power. XEPJV and KHBR are sometimes heard briefly when they sign on for the day, and later on KZQQ puts in a good signal when it goes to day power. KGOW is still the last one standing as it fades into a flutter.

DX/Retro: I've logged KNZR in Bakersfield, CA, a couple of times at night. Occasionally I used to hear XEMAS in Salamanca at night, but there hasn't been any trace of it in a few years. Also, these days there's no trace of KTXZ in Westlake Hills (just 79 miles away). I used to hear it fairly regularly, especially at sunrise and sunset.

I hope he's ok too. By the way, can anyone start the Frequency of the Week threads or are only MarioMania or cyberdad allowed to do those? If they are still doing clear channel frequencies then 1570 is next because it's a Mexican clear channel.

Boise ID
Day zip
Night KNZR & a little of KVAN Burbank WA (Tri-Cities)
SR SS has been occasional KIQS Willows CA.
Checked and have never heard NY.
