Chicago Stations in Florida, NYC Stations near Chicago

I was on vacation in St Augustine Florida this past week and I was able to catch very clearly several of the big Chicago AM stations on my car radio. I clearly heard at times 720 WGN, 780 WBBM, 890 WLS, and AM 1000 WMVP. I was not able to catch 670 WSCR dues to a station with Spanish programming on it. Tonight while driving home SW of Chicago, I was able to pick up mostly clear 660 WFAN, 710 WOR, 770 WABC, and 1010 WINS very faintly but audible out of NYC. This is usually a hard catch in my area. No 880 WCBS due to being to close to 890 WLS transmitter. There seemed to be something on almost every channel tonight. 620 WTMJ, 650 WSM, 700 WLW, 740 CFZM, 750 WSB, 760 WJR, 810 WGY, 820 WBAP under WCPT local, 830 WCCO, 840 WHAS, 850 KOA, 870 WWL, 990 CBW, 1020 KDKA, 1030 WBZ, 1040 WHO, 1060 KYW, 1100 WTAM, 1120 KMOX, 1140 WRVA, 1180 WHAM, and 1200 WOAI to name a few outside of the locals and the ones from NYC I already mentioned.

Hey, John .....

Other than the car radio, what manner of receiver do you use at home for DXiing?

First DXing 'catch' I remember was off a GE clock radio, John. In a form of geographically-reversed situation one overnight of a school morning (naturally) our WABC 770 was off, and this thing from Chicago on 780 was coming in. CBA 1070 from Nova Scotia was another early fix. The habit had taken hold.

('Hi, folks. My name is Steve, and I admit : just like youse, I'm a struggling DXer looking to recover.')

1010 out of NYC was remarkable considering they are directional generally east. The coverage maps show a very small "leakage" east. IMHO if you get WINS AM again buy a lottery ticket.

I was shocked to here it myself, It would fade in and out. As for the other NYC stations that I mentioned, I usually cant even get them here but for some reason they were pretty clear. I was enjoying the music on 770 WABC which I listened to for almost a half hour without loosing it.
