Atlanta Ratings May 2024

Big jump for WALR. Slight improvement for 96.1 The Beat on the new signal. CHR on 105.3 is down to 0.7. Ouch.

Braves have helped 680. IMHO Power will end up like 640. Just clearing commercials for National buys. I wouldn't want my bonus based on the iHeart Atlanta performance this month. Maybe Bobbie Bones can help the Bull.

The morning situation among the Adult R&B stations here is interesting.

Urban One carries Premiere's Steve Harvey on their big station(s) and NOT Rickey Smiley, their own show and star personality. He's relegated to a translator.

Cox carries Rickey Smiley in all 4 of their Florida markets. They'd probably love to have him in Atlanta as well. Although the numbers at Kiss appear to be doing just fine without him.

Yeah it is weird. Similar situation in Memphis where Steve Harvey is on the Cumulus UAC, and the iHeart UAC has a local morning show. Not sure when the contract is up at WAMJ, but it might make sense for WALR to make a run for it at that time.

I remember back in 2004 when Tom Joyner was on 100,000 watt WBAV in Charlotte. Radio One bought out Reach Media, stole Tom and put him on 6,000 watt WQNC. WQNC beat WBAV for several books, and WBAV didn’t start winning in morning drive again until 2006. Happened on several stations, and they made sure to put measures in place to lock down their morning show.

I personally prefer Rickey Smiley over Steve Harvey. Steve’s show is prerecorded with no listener interaction, and I think it’s gotten stale.

The Block up in Greenville has Harvey who I think is stale also and doesn’t fit the format extremely well. I’m surprised they haven’t gone with The Breakfast Club since they air it from 5:30-6a before Harvey and replay it on weekend nights.

The urban AC already has Smiley and the hip hop translator has Young Joc.

It was all due to contracts. At the time, Tom Joyner was already established at Kiss 104.1 when Urban One took over. Rickey Smiley was still under the hip hop format and parked at HOT 107.9 and actually broadcasted live from Downtown Atlanta. Steve Harvey’s only option for an Atlanta home was Majic 107.5. His show also broadcasted live from Atlanta, Buckhead to be exact.

On social media when Rickey Smiley’s show was moved to 102.9 he did vent frustration about it! Based on Majic’s success, i don't see them getting rid of Steve Harvey no time soon.

Cumulus has Steve Harvey on their Hip Hop stations in Macon, Tallahassee and Biloxi. There’s lots of other Hip Hop stations that still carry his Urban AC based morning show too. With the addition of Young Joc and Dede in the Mornings now being syndicated, im surprised changes haven't happened. I guess if its not broke why fix it 😬

I could be wrong but when Tom Joyner retired, didn't Rickey Smiley basically take over on Joyner's stations? And concurrent with that, didn't his show change from a Hip Hop show to more of an Urban AC show? And isn't that what was behind his move from Hot 107.9 to 102.9? I could have this all wrong.

That's generally correct. Rickey had some growing pains after the switch to Urban AC, and a drop in the ratings was part of the reason for the switch. Radio One also wanted to clear The Morning Hustle in their home market. The Morning Hustle has significantly underperformed Rickey in most markets, so I'm not sure that was the smartest decision.

In Greenville-Spartanburg, Audacy is pretty stuck with Steve Harvey. Young Joc is on STREETZ 99.5.

Not necessarily. There's The Breakfast Club, DeDe, Ebro, Big Boy, The Morning Hustle. No shortage of morning options. You could make the argument that the first two in particular are a better fit on "The Block" than Steve Harvey is in 2024.

I think The Breakfast Club would be a much better fit on The Block. Charlamagne is from South Carolina, and worked in Charleston and Columbia. I agree that Steve Harvey doesn't really appeal to the demo they're trying to reach. It really doesn't matter, because the station is never going to be competitive on a translator.

Kiss 104.1 (Cox) dropped Tom Joyner a couple of years before he retired. Urban One placed him on Classix 102.9 and i think that was the big push to the launch after BOOM 102.9 died. Once Rickey Smiley became Joyner’s replacement, Urban One still decided to keep him locally at HOT 107.9. Instead, they had Russ Parr on Classix before officially bringing Rickey Smiley a few years later.

THE BLOCK in Greenville broadcast Steve Harvey and The Breakfast Club which is crazy. When the station launched they were the only Hip Hop station. I feel they went with Harvey to compete with the Urban AC 107.3 JAMZ but also to keep Breakfast Club from going to the competition which was Rhythmic HOT 98.1.

Columbia’s HOT 103.9 did a similar move years ago. They were the affiliate for Rickey Smiley and The Breakfast Club. That forced iHeart to go with Big Boy vs Breakfast Club when 100.1 The Beat launched.
