Mark James, writer of Suspicious Minds, Hooked on a Feeling, more. passes

According to the Best Classic Bands website, Mark James, born Nov. 29,1940 and raised in Houston, Texas passed June 8,2024. Mr. James also co-wrote "Always on My Mind" which became a big hit for Willie Nelson.

Hooked on a Feeling and Suspicious Minds were also hits for multiple artists. BJ Thomas and Blue Swede for the former, Elvis and Dwight Yoakam for the latter. I've read that Blue Swede spoke very little English are recorded "Hooked" phonetically, having no idea what they were singing about. Can anyone confirm this?

That's the version that begins with the "Ooga-Chaga" chant. I don't know what ooga chaga means or why they used it in that song, but it's annoying as hell. I found a live video of the band doing the ooga chaga while the singer tries to do the verses over them. It was terrible. I can't confirm that he sang it phonetically, but I can confirm that I really dislike the ooga chaga chant.

The stories about Mark James reconfirm my view that Memphis was an amazing city for music in the late 60s and early 70s.
