KGO-TV turns 75 years old

Disney put out a release showing that the station is turning 75 years old. Also it's San Francisco's second TV station after KPIX to go on the air.

Just like when radio turned 100, there are many legacy TV stations turning 75 this year. In other words, those stations who received the original licenses back in the day, all have anniversaries around the same time.

Fear not
For these shall soon abate
But just wait
Until 2028

It's interesting to see old footage of Roger Grimsby. I remember him from channel 7—WABC-TV, that is.

Personally, I am looking to December 22, 2027, which will be the 75th anniversary of WPMT/43 York PA, which signed on as WSBA-TV and is the longest continuously operated UHF station on the same channel number in history. The other station that signed on the same day, WSBT-TV/22 South Bend IN, operated on channel 34 for its first six years.

The only station that signed on before those two no longer exists: KPTV/27 Portland OR (September 18, 1952), which was sold five years later to the owner of channel 12 and taken dark.

Yes Roger Grimsby was with KGO-TV before ABC moved him to New York to do Eyewitness News. Grimsby's San Francisco spot went to Ray Tannehill in the interim as Newsbeat before KGO got Jerry Jensen and VanAmburg to anchor Channel 7 News Scene.

Former KGO-TV Sports Anchor Dan Lovett appears in an interview on KHOU Houston for an interview over his time when he was named as Sports Anchor in the Houston area. The Last time he was on TV full time was when he was on KGO-TV in the 1990's.

A couple of our TV stations were turning 75 recently. The celebration stayed inside because research showed that the LAST thing stations should be doing is admitting to being that old. In other words, if you want to attract a younger audience, don't tell them what they're watching is older than grandma.
