SBS Buys KROI for $7.5 million

Of course La Raza is out, so it would seem La Ley is the most likely name. Been curious about the La Privada format in LA; supposedly an edgier version of Regional Mexican? Is “Alternative RM” a thing?
It's the "alterado" format, more of a younger sound, and adjacent to narcocorridos. It doesn't quite get to glorifying the head-chopping and use of weapons that the very illegal narcorridos do, but it does borrow some of its gangsta cred.

There's very good songs that refer to the drug trade because it's just a fact of life, but even in this subset, the image is mostly badass posturing and a don't F with me attitude. Think the typical bragging about guns, girls and weed of reggaetón, but with brass instruments behind it rather than a dembow beat.

You can pump the breaks on the speculation a bit...

On their earnings call just now, SBS CEO Raúl Alarcón noted that a launch will likely not happen until the 4th quarter of the year. He also stated that they have a format already developed "ready to go" and available on a "secure online site" that is continuously being tweaked.

Got that. Sounds like a parallel would be the “rougher” forms of Rap and Hip-Hop. Probably not something SBS would use for 92.1, but keeping an eye on any additional HD subchannels that might launch after SBS closes on the station. The 92.1 signal has consistently been in HD since the new transmitter/tower went on the air three years ago, but has only had the HD-1.

Like I said earlier, we’re just bored. Long wait for things to happen with KROI as well as KFNC and KLAT.

Will have to check the transcript of that, but not yet available on any free site that I could find at a quick search. Closing currently set for November 27.

How would such a “secure online site” work? Available to SBS employees or perhaps a test audience?

Not alterado at all.. and the term atlerado is really no longer relevant the corridos went from corridos verded to corridos alterados to corridos belicos and so on.. but alterado is no longer current
Yes. Every time someone thinks that a form of regional can be a separate format, that form goes mainstream and no longer is exclusive.

But it can be maintained, right? There are a few examples of "grupero" subgenres, such at Norteño and cumbia, being used as the main attraction at a few Regional Mexican stations across the southwest US.

The newer "corridos" popular with the TikTok crowd should be worth at least exploring as a format IMO. This new music fad is nothing like the "duranguense" or "tribal" fads of yesteryear.

Even Snoop Dogg has a corrido from a few years back. It has really taken off. Peso Pluma was on Jimmy Fallon last year as well as on the cover of Rolling Stone.

As expected, RO/SST has filed a request for a third extension of consummation for the KROI sale with the FCC, and already anticipates a fourth filing in three months. Still aiming for a November 27 closing (day before Thanksgiving).

“Sugarland Station Trust, LLC (“Sugarland”), the assignor, hereby requests a further extension of the period for consummation of the transaction underlying the assignment of the licenses reflected in assignment application 0000218902 (“Further Extension”).

Sugarland and Spanish Broadcasting System SouthWest, Inc. (“SBS SouthWest”) and SBS Houston Licensing, Inc. (“SBS Houston” and together with SBS SouthWest, the “Buyer”) have entered into a Fourth Amendment to Asset Purchase Agreement as of May 30, 2024 (the “Fourth Amendment’). Pursuant to the Fourth Amendment, Buyer has the right to delay the Closing until November 27, 2024, subject to filing of this Further Extension and another in late September. It is anticipated that Sugarland and Buyer will consummate the assignment on or before November 27, 2024 in accordance with the Fourth Amendment. All of the pertinent information included in the above-referenced assignment application (as amended) is still current.”

Minor thing, but checking KROI today I notice they have finally changed their studio phone number for the noontime “Solid Gold Gospel” request hour to one that doesn’t end in “0921”. However the new number they are giving on the air is different from the new number promoted on their Facebook and Instagram pages.🤔

Haven’t heard any frequency redirect promos in recent checks of 92.1.

How strange.

This may sound absurd, but could it be that SBS could be inheriting one of the numbers?

Checked KROI again today, and they again are plugging their new phone number and said “Change is good as we prepare to permanently move over to 102.1 HD-2 from 92.1.”

Might we be getting close to SBS closing on the station and launching its new format? Wonder if rumors of a 97.5 flip to Regional Mexican might have put a hurry up on things.

And let us not forget that September, being the month of Mexican Independence, is a fitting date for a format change to Regional Mexican.

More likely: they changed VoIP vendors on the request lines and decided to not port over the numbers.
The change was from a 713 to an 832 number which is unusual for radio use in Houston.

BTW if SBS has kept to the latest revision of the APA, there are still $1.7M left in payments on the KROI purchase. Final balloon payment would be due on the November 27 closing date.

I have a feeling that the closing might be moved up to September, but who knows…this has been a long, bizarre saga. Could just as easily wind up in 2025.

VoIP has changed what's "usual."
The days of every request line being on the 713-390 choke exchange are gone.
Which is how Eagle ended up with an 832 and 93Q with a 346 after going VoIP.

I have no insight into how SBS pays its bills, but usually when bankers work out a schedule like what they did, they keep to it.

Unless the APA is amended yet again. The closing date has already been pushed back twice along with the payment schedule being reworked each time. Another delay would send it into 2025, which would require a fourth and then fifth Extension of Consummation request with the FCC.

I don't like corridos alterados, at least in Mexico, it is highly regulated and the radio cannot transmit that content. Therefore, a difference is clearly seen between a "Mexican regional" station in the US versus a "Grupera" in any city in Mexico.
